It's one thing to be an assistant coach, another thing to be a HC.

Preseason is easy...compared to when the real bullets start flying.

One thing I've learned in 30 years of coaching and watching many successful coaches to get promoted to HC ... the most common rookie coach mistake is over-coaching. Getting too cute or meddling too much and not letting your players play.

Also, rookie HC for some reason feel they have to take ownership of the team by making statement moves...often times this is seen by benching a star player.

Some coaches fall in love with a certain player for many different reasons, case in point, Patrick Cobbs.

Sparano paniced early...he abandoned the run. The reason why he should have stayed with it is simply because thats where his best talent is. In football, you win and lose with your strengths...at least you should.

Miami lost yesterday to their weakness...their WR's and QB execution.

Sparano over coached by playing the numbers...3rd and goal from the 2 yd line vs man coverage..book says pass. Sparano failed to take context into account, context of a Ronnie Brown or Ricky Williams in the backfield and the fact that no greater talent exists on this roster.

Sparano got cute with his personnel groupings...(read love story above) no rationale for RW or RB coming out on 3rd downs, none, fins can pass or run with either of them in the line up, not the case with Cobbs, so defenses play accordingly.

Wilford...this is Sparanos "its my way or the highway" statement...I'm not saying that you dont dis a player now and then...but this team paid Wilford millions...the way I would have dissed Wilford is to put him on kickoffs and punt teams...but not having him active is a travesty...Wilford would have made Jets double him in flanker position on the goalline offense.

I like Sparanos straight talk...but in the end...he is a rookie too.

I am absolutely sure he and Parcells have met or will meet individually to conduct a coaching assessment.

Expect changes vs Cardinals...unfortunately, not results.

my thoughts 2,2 have 2 5-11 guys jump 4 the ball, lol not 2 run it with RW r RB thank god i dont live and die on sunday's anymore

This is the one that gets me the most. It's not even hindsight. It's just hey.....you have two quality backs and inside the five yard line it's time to use them. I'd rather go four and out with the comfort that we gave it our best shot by giving it to our best players on offense four straight times than go four and out because of passing plays in short yardage situations.

What Really Gets Me Mad Is That Sparano Just Stayed With Ricky When He Looked Terrible. Ronnie Was Looking Good For The 3 Plays He Was In There. Its Clear That Ronnie Is Our Best Back So U Have 2 Live And Die With Your Biggest Gun. And The Cobbs Thing Almost Made Me Comitt Sucide. And I Never Agree With Phin The Freak But I Have 2 Say That Your Pretty Much On The Money With This Post.

What was even worse on that 3rd and 2 was that I'm pretty sure we had an EMPTY backfield. So the defense didn't have to even consider the run. Why wouldn't you keep a guy back there with Pennington just to keep the LB's honest?

that still pisses me off hearing that. we are supposed to be building a new attitude, building from the trenches. we just drafted a mauling left tackle number one overall, signed smiley 2 seconds after free agency began, and we cant pound a ball in with ronnie or ricky. thats bull****

Its called QB Draw when its in shotgun and QB sneak when its not. Consider that when we go 5 wide teams would not be able to blitz pennington in that situation. its too close to the endzone and atleast one person would be open no matter what. So they just spy him and play short zone instead.

Yeah I agree that Sparano made some questionable decisions.

Cobbs is a good special teams player but I could've sworn that he was in the majority of 3rd down plays. Really, is he a better option that Ronnie or Ricky? He may be a better blocker than either but he isn't in the same league as R&R with the ball in his hands.

I'm also not a fan of leaving Wilford on the inactive list. Ignore the money he's getting. He's the only receiver on our roster with a proven history of production in the NFL. I cant explain why he hasn't produced and apparently he must've had a poor week of practice to warrant being made inactive. But I just don't believe he has "lost" it. Put him on the field and let him try to build some chemistry with Penny.

And I'd also be remissed if I didn't express some displeasure with the play calling. I thought the Jets were rip for a handful of well timed screen passes but they never materialized. The flea flicker with Ricky probably would've resulted in a TD to Ginn if Ricky hadn't botched the play.

At least I don't get the sense that Sparano is so stubborn that he's not willing to admit that he may have made some mistakes. I would be surprised if we didn't see a lot more of Ronnie and Wilford next week.

Did Ricky have time to pitch back the flea flicker? I thought the d-line was right on top of him, I was pretty drunk so I may be wrong, but that is the way I remember it.

This is exactly my sentiment. 3 yards with 2 downs, with arguably and quite possibly the best back end in the AFC. I rather bet on the running game in that situation, than pass twice!

Would have been nice to win, yes...

but in the long run ? who cares?....we have a 20 game preseason this year

we are evaluating and gearing ourselves up for the future.

it is too bad that brady went down this year, because we unfortunately aren't ready to win enough games to take the east.

The question now is, what are the adjustments? This will tell all on what type of coaching staff we have.
I know this is a sensitive subject but I'd bet Bess is in to return punts, and Wilford will be not only active, but we'll see him across the middle with the TE clearing.

I think we'll see more of a Parcells type game strategy next week.

I disagree with the 3 and 4 and goal. I have no problem with him throwing the ball on both downs when they were in man coverage. Our WR have to win that battle. It's all about execution. I would be pissed if we ran the ball and didn't gain a yard. Running the ball into the teeth of a good front 8 at that time in the game with a young OL not a good idea. The defense told us we would have to beat them threw the air and we couldnt. My problem with Sparano was not having Wilford at the game. Even if it was for his blocking. It would have been great having him fight for that ball in the Endzone instead of Ginn. If he doesnt get that ball he would have knocked it down. Giving us one more shot. Also having Bess blocking a LB on the end around was a mismatch.

You make a valid argument, the problem is that as a team, you have to play to your strengths regardless of what the D "dictates".

There is a reason the Jets choose to go man and stack the LOS...to take away the Fins desire to run and in the hopes of getting the Fins to choose Pass knowing Fins' lack of talent AND betting on their DB's to win those 1 on 1 match ups. They were right.

Fins blew a scoring opp by conceding trust and confidence in their O Line, and hoping to get a favorable route vs a rookie DB...playing the odds if you will...Fins were wrong, obviously.

I bet what you'll see next time is a committment to the run, after all, wasnt Sparano talking the power run game and the O-Line upgrades? Didnt we invest the #1 pick in a LT? We should have run to our monster LT hole with Ronnie Brown lead by Grigsby at least once, then perhaps on 4th down rolled out on a pass play option.

Fins strength in talent is at RB...period...we need to leverage that talent to draw that 8th man in the box (most teams will drop their safety anyways because they dont fear our WR). We need to be stubborn in running right at that 8 man front, shorten 3rd down to 5 yards or less, and then make the short passes. Without this running game, we'll have no play action, and that spells doom for Penny in the pocket out of a shotgun with teams blitzing and DE's pinning their ears back.

Simple, run to setup the pass, playaction to score TD's. We never established the run against the Jets, so , no pass offense available.
