It's one thing to be an assistant coach, another thing to be a HC.
Preseason is easy...compared to when the real bullets start flying.
One thing I've learned in 30 years of coaching and watching many successful coaches to get promoted to HC ... the most common rookie coach mistake is over-coaching. Getting too cute or meddling too much and not letting your players play.
Also, rookie HC for some reason feel they have to take ownership of the team by making statement moves...often times this is seen by benching a star player.
Some coaches fall in love with a certain player for many different reasons, case in point, Patrick Cobbs.
Sparano paniced early...he abandoned the run. The reason why he should have stayed with it is simply because thats where his best talent is. In football, you win and lose with your strengths...at least you should.
Miami lost yesterday to their weakness...their WR's and QB execution.
Sparano over coached by playing the numbers...3rd and goal from the 2 yd line vs man coverage..book says pass. Sparano failed to take context into account, context of a Ronnie Brown or Ricky Williams in the backfield and the fact that no greater talent exists on this roster.
Sparano got cute with his personnel groupings...(read love story above) no rationale for RW or RB coming out on 3rd downs, none, fins can pass or run with either of them in the line up, not the case with Cobbs, so defenses play accordingly.
Wilford...this is Sparanos "its my way or the highway" statement...I'm not saying that you dont dis a player now and then...but this team paid Wilford millions...the way I would have dissed Wilford is to put him on kickoffs and punt teams...but not having him active is a travesty...Wilford would have made Jets double him in flanker position on the goalline offense.
I like Sparanos straight talk...but in the end...he is a rookie too.
I am absolutely sure he and Parcells have met or will meet individually to conduct a coaching assessment.
Expect changes vs Cardinals...unfortunately, not results.
