“I still think of him as a first year starter, yeah," coach Tony Sparano said this week. "I think that we’d be making a mistake to think otherwise right now. I think that I want to let the whole process happen here. Whenever we flip the calendar, I’ll say he’s a second year starter, or whatever the case is then. I just want to let the whole process happen and sit down and evaluate the whole body of work at the end of this. I think that’s really fair for Chad.

"He’s doing a tremendous job right now. I see him getting better, and better, and better. I just want to see this thing go, and really be able to break down some of the good things he’s done, and some of the not so good things at the end of this whole thing, and then we’ll go from there. To me, he’s a first year starter that’s getting better and better every week."

I wouldn't say that, I see it as he's not completely invested in the idea that he's our franchise QB for the next 10 or so years, and he's just taking it slowly, and watching his progress. He was mostly praising him there.

i dont think sparano was being negative. but he will never just hand it to Henne. This staff is all about competition. Competition at every position makes everyone better. So no, he doesn't want to give Henne piece of mind and risk him becoming complacent (see Tony Romo).

It's the same reason Connor Barth was brought in to compete with Carpenter this offseason, you never want a guy to get comfortable and complacent.

Doesn't seem negative. Just like the other guys said its more about not wanting him to get comfortable. Competion keeps guys are their toes. I think it's one of the resons Crowders isn't as good as everyone thought hoped he would be. He knows we don't have much better options as sad as it is. But he (Crowder) better watch his *** this offseason cuz I'm sure we will draft a pair of ILBs just like we did every other position.

Not only do I not see anythingw rong with what he said I agree with it. Henne has shown tremendous progress but he has to get better. If this is it, he will be an adequate NFL QB but that's it. To be a franchise/great QB Henne has to be able to recognize things pre-snap, audible and take advantage of mismatches. When he's doing those things, get the annointing oil out.

I think Parcells and Ireland could say they are just as "iffy" about Sparano, especially if he keeps Henning around as the OC. I think Sparano could learn a lot more about managing the clock and other stuff. Just my 2 cents worth.

Sparano would save a lot of time & energy if he'd condense stuff, eg: 'Henne is a first year starter that's getting better and we'll evaluate the situation later'.

Yeah, sometimes "coach speak" can get a little too drawn out. I see it like this; Sparano is happy with where Henne is now, but he knows he can get even better.

I think had Henne played in one of our first three games we might be at the top of the AFC East (that 0-3 start is hard to dig your way out of). Nothing against Pennington, but we have played better under Henne. I think going away from the Wildcat has made the team better....but losing Ronnie sucked. Next year we should be sweet, especially if we can add a #1 WR and some key players on both sides of the ball.

I wouldn't say he is "iffy" on Henne, he is saying what any SMART coach would say in this situation. Henne is a young QB, who has shown a lot of promise, yet is not elite just yet. Sparano is not boxing himself into a corner until he can get more of a look at Henne. We as fans can say that it looks like Henne is the real deal, but as a coach, Sparano can't just throw all his eggs into one basket with just 10 games.

Basically, it looks as if Henne is the long term guy, but you always need to leave yourself some wiggle room just in case.

Just seems to be he didnt want to publicly state that Henne will start next season. I'm sure it could just be smoke and mirrors but it just read strange to me. But thats just me i guess.
He just doesn't want Henne to sit back these final few weeks of the season. He wants Henne to go out, give it his all and work to be the starter next year. Let's not kid ourselves, Henne is the starter in 2010 barring any injury. Sparano doesn't want Henne to get too comfortable though.
