Special Teams Good & Mostly Bad

Sturgis has really hurt us on kick offs. In 21 kickoffs he only has 7 touch backs. 14 returns is the second most allowed by any team. and the 390 kickoff return yards allowed are the worst in the league. If you look at the better kickers they are getting 20 touch backs and 3 returns (Justin Tucker) We you face that many returns you are eventually going to get burned.

Almost worth having a roster spot for guy who can just kick touch backs.

Yeah, Buff did that to keep Carp kicking FG's, and Gay has done a great job in doing so. I thought Sturgis had a stronger leg.

Honestly a lot of oppossing returners have fielded KOs more than 5 yards deep in the endzone and ran it out because they know how terrible our coverage teams have been.

True but the better kick off specialist don't even give the returner a chance. They kick it out of the end zone. Sturgis can't do that very often.

Looks like the Colts use their punter to kick off and he is one of the best in the league at touch backs.
With Fields struggling (league low net punt average) should we replace him next year with someone who can punt and kick off?

Sturgis has been solid on FG's this year.

Cannot imagine us missing LB Sheppard or DT Coleman.

So you shorten your DTs for the 5-2 defense when employed and what if Starks continues to have health issues?

Sheppard hurts special teams coverage and return units...LBs are the backbone of special teams.

Not ready to throw Fields under the bus, he has been special and believe he will get back to his old self. However, on net punt average, which does include coverage, we are 9 yards in difference. That is huge in field position for a team who has trouble in scoring.

Sheppard has broken the back of the of the coverage unit. Slow and terrible angles. With Trusnick and Tripp back there now you might be surprised how much better field position gets.

Fields had better pick it up. His contract is NOT guaranteed. He is NOT going to collect his 4 million a year in 2015 and 2016 with league low net average.

Who signs a punter to a 5 year, 13.3 million dollar contract? Only the Dolphins.

I do, and the team has. Coleman was in for 18 snaps with Starks out, and would have very like not seen the field if he was healthy. Add in Shelby moving inside some, and I think Fede can do a bit of the same. They will not be missed in any way, compared to what we gain.

Jones and Jordan vs Coleman and Sheppard? C'MON MAN.

Other than Michael Thomas, who has been lights out, and a couple of others mentioned.

I was quoting these two fine gentlemen.

Likely a team where the punter was the MVP, and worth every dime. I will bet that Fields is going to nail his kicks vs GB.

Keep in mind the 5-2 that we've been running was more a matter of neccessity to cover our defenciencies at the LB position after Misi and Ellerbe went down. With Misi back and Jenkins playing well don't be surprised to see less of it. It'll likely be more or less a situational package as season goes on.

I suppose Jordan will be playing special team but Jones won't.

We're short linebackers. Misi can't get healthy...McCain can't stay active and Trusnik has been forced to start. C'MON MAN

Last year, Jordan was our best player on special teams, and Jones played being average. We lose nothing in cutting Sheppard and Coleman.
