Sporting News' take on Beck

Of course the Sporting New's loves the pick considering they claimed Quinn was the "biggest fraud in the draft." Whether that is true or not remains to be seen, but TSN lost some credibility to me after seeing how lowly the thought of him.

the maturity part I think is overated. So should we only draft BYU qb's because they have to go on a mission. Football maturity is what counts and he is no more mature in that respect than a guy like Quinn. Clinton Portis is a few years older than some of the backs drafted and he still can't think before he speaks. Ricky Williams is 30 and well , we know that story.

Didn't notice that they slammed Quinn, just that they thought Beck was a steal. I think they're right.

Maturity doesn't involve age exclusively. Anyone with half a brain knows Portis is not mature, was never mature, doesn't look like he'll ever mature. A person with good moral character, such as Beck, does mature even more with age, but I bet even at 19 or whenever he went on his mission he was more mature than Portis or Vick is now. It's not what they've done, but what they've done shapes how they are now, which is what we judge maturity on.

how can they lose some credibility already when you dont know if they are right?

its like that guy who had Tim Couch as like a 4th rounder, when everyone else had him number 1...

you dont know if the sporting news is right or wrong, how can you judge them already?

None of this maturity will make him a better QB. Its working hard at his craft and learning the position. The maturity may help to keep away distractions but most BYU qb's would fit similar bill to Beck and there has not been like a great trend of success coming out of the BYU system. There has been some success.

Apparently, 20 other teams felt similar about him.

:err:
I have a hard time believing that. I do believe that immaturity would HINDER him from becoming a better QB.

Great article.

The writer gives some strong points and insights about why he's high on Beck.
Maybe we can trade Lebatard or Hyde for this guy to come to a Miami paper.

I found it interesting to hear that Griese called him to congratulate him right after he was selected.

Also, it bears noting once again, one of the glaring reasons this franchise is still entrenched in the hole that it is........

Despite passing on Quinn, the Dolphins invested a higher draft pick in Beck than they had in any quarterback since selecting Dan Marino in 1983. They won't regret it.

Since 1983.

Over 2 decades this team didn't invest in a young QB to groom for the future.
Pure neglect.

Thankfully there is finally a GM involved with this team.

Not having a GM in charge of this team was probably the biggest reason of all that this team has slowly sunk into obscurity actually.

Beck works hard at learning his craft, maturity is why.

BYU is a non BCS school which has built a moderately good reputation even without the BCS perks. The only other school that comes close imo is Boise State. It isn't that BYU will always produce great QBs, just that they're capable of doing so when they get top rated talent. Beck had the raw talent to be recruited by Miami (he turned them down and chose to go to BYU instead). BYU can develop QB talent VERY well.

What do you think maturity is? It's going to help him ... work hard and learn his position.

Ask ATL fans if they think Vick is working hard and learning his position. I don't think he's improved his game at all. Ask Charger fans exactly how much Leaf worked and learned. Some get by on physical talent alone, some don't.
