Sports Buzz and Practice Notes 8-19

### Baltimore-based Dolphins fan Neal Driscoll, who works in sales, has gotten 806 fan signatures on a petition to try to get the Dolphins to move Dion Jordan from defensive end to linebacker, which is a bigger need area for Miami.

Jordan’s message to Driscoll? “Stick to sales. They got me here to pass rush. That’s what I should be focusing on, not playing linebacker.”

He says he’s comfortable at defensive end and believes he has had a good training camp/preseason.

### Undrafted rookie making the strongest push? Linebacker/end Chris McCain, who was dismissed from the California team last September and had offers only from the Dolphins and St. Louis.

“He’s got an interesting skill set we are trying to get to know better,” Joe Philbin said.

McCain is working mostly at linebacker but some at defensive end on third downs and said he's being used in ways similar to Jordan's role in the Dolphins' speed package.

### Mike Wallace said the NFL’s renewed emphasis on defensive holding and illegal contact is helping “other teams, not our team. We don’t get those calls. I don’t know why.”

### From today’s Dolphins practice: Will Davis began the day as the No. 3 corner but Jamar Taylor finished the day in that job. Davis slipped and was beaten for a long touchdown by Kevin Cone….

Joe Philbin was non-committal about whether Knowshon Moreno would play in Sunday’s preseason game. During a break in practice today, Moreno ran over to the sideline to do conditioning work with Mike Pouncey.

### Ryan Tannehill had several impressive deep throws: two to Damian Williams and one to Armon Binns.

### John Potter, trying to replace injured Caleb Sturgis, hit four of five. His 51-yarder hit the side of the goalpost. Sturgis declined to discuss his situation afterward.

### Brady Quinn threw two interceptions and has three the past two days. He isn’t making a convincing case for the third QB job.

### I asked Joe Philbin if Jordan Tripp, who got some more first team work today, appears able to make a contribution on defense and special teams this season or whether he’s a developmental prospect. Philbin said he likes what he sees and will know a lot more in the next two weeks.

### The guards (Daryn Colledge on the left side and Shelley Smith on the right) remained the same as Monday.

### Walt Aikens left practice early, for good, with a finger injury.

### Michael Egnew made a terrific catch on a sideline pattern from Matt Moore, the best catch I’ve ever seen him make.

### Jason Taylor, who left ESPN a year ago, took a job with NBC Sports Network on Tuesday, as an analyst on Pro Football Talk with Mike Florio.

Tannehill hitting some deep balls, just not to Wallace. J.T. working with Florio, oh boy, what next?

Time is running out on Egnew. Would be great if he made a statement against Dallas this week. Wish there was a little more clarity at TE behind Clay and Sims.

Hmmmm, I wonder if Taylor knows of Florio's prohibition against reporting anything good about he Dolphins? Maybe Florio thought Taylor was a lifelong Jet or something.

JT and Florio, lmao. Maybe JT can offset some of the Fins hate from that hack.

I'm not so sure about that. although I did catch Brackett looking decent in blocking in the game the other night. It aint over til its over and right now, it aint over.

Both Williams coming on strong the past week or so. Sounds like he caught at least two deep balls today. Working at special teams on returns too. I'm thinking one will be our 6th WR and the other will be our 3rd or 4th RB. Good luck with that TV announcers....

First the Jets, now Florio, talk about going over to the enemy.

not so.

actually, in camp anyways, tanny and wallace have hooked up on LOOONG bals and some improvement with tanny has been noticed from coaches to players. todays practice? who knows why? was he even on the field with those guys? were they specificly working on certain plays FOR those guys mentioned?

and if folks want to do a "well, wallace just cant help tanny at all with the long ball" thing than we can ask why MATT MOORE and PAT DEVLIN had loong td's with wallace and tanny cant".

we shall all see how well tanny has progressed with the long ball come time for REAL games. this binns and williams catching "long" passes today and NOT wallace mean nothing and have NOTHING to do with mike wallace's over all game or chemistry with tanny.

Maybe that's the lowest risk option after Dallas Thomas stunk it up the other night. I guess Daryn and Shelley are the guys we run with and we hope to get some gaps for the RBs. Billy Turner may get an opportunity midseason.

Tripp is going to be good - book it! He's doing well right from the get go. Smart, hard working, athletic, versatile - plays all 3 LB positions, great on special teams, natural leader and he loves to play the game. Joe is generally reticent to speak too highly of the rookies. He is of the Green Bay school of making them wait on the bench before giving them an opportunity, but it seems like he thinks Tripp might be able to handle it.

Sounds like Jordan wants to stay where he is at.
