### Despite Stephen Ross’ fondness and respect for friend and confidante Carl Peterson, the Dolphins owner never has been quite motivated enough to give him a big salary and a lofty title --- a role that would hold appeal to Peterson, according to a friend.

But in some ways, Peterson’s influence over the Dolphins has never been greater, and it’s evident now in his role as Ross’ chief advisor in the general manager search.

Ray Farmer reportedly is a favorite for the Dolphins’ GM job, and it’s no coincidence that he’s the one candidate with whom Peterson worked closely, for three years in Kansas City.

Scott Pioli, the former two-time NFL Executive of the Year, was never a candidate for the Dolphins’ GM job, and it’s no coincidence that Peterson wasn’t a fan of Pioli and is believed to have told Ross as much.

Not only did Pioli replace Peterson in Kansas City, but Peterson’s former Chiefs colleagues called Peterson and bad-mouthed Pioli, according to someone with direct knowledge.

So Peterson wasn’t about to recommend Pioli to Ross, and Ross thus had no reason to pursue him. Pioli, who would have considered Dolphins overtures, never heard from Miami and took an assistant general manager job with the Falcons on Wednesday.

And remember, when the Dolphins were trying to decide whether to hire Joe Philbin or Mike McCoy as coach two years ago, Peterson told Ross that he never saw a coach’s presentation more impressive than Philbin’s.

So even without a title, Peterson still wields more influence over the owner than most of the people who do. And that’s even with Ross already announcing that he won’t hire Peterson for anything after the GM search is over.

Thank God Peterson steered Ross away from Pioli. Pioli is a train wreck as a person and he would be the last person this organization should hire after getting rid of Ireland.

Team Ross and Peterson

It shouldn't have taken Peterson to steer Ross clear of Pioli. I mean, the guy had a Class A Nixonian bugout in Kansas City, right down to tapping his co-workers' phones to see who was bad mouthing him to the press. I'm not sure he's mentally stable enough to be a dog catcher.

At the same time that Peterson influence may end up translating to Ray Farmer being named GM, which is a choice I've become somewhat skeptical about. If Barry Jackson is right about Peterson being wowed by Philbin's presentation two years ago that might serve as precedent to Farmer being the choice for GM, since Peterson is if anything pushing harder for his protege than he did for Philbin.

You realize that Carl Peterson was KC GM for nearly 20 years and after they appointed Scott Pioli to replace him, Pioli set about to cut all of the long serving Chiefs employees who had been loyal to Peterson. Slash and burn, in the style of his father in law, Bill Parcells. And not just the scouting department. Admin secretaries, equipment personnel, etc were all dispatched. Net effect, Pioli visibly tried to exorcise every trace of Peterson, so it's not a surprise that Pioli was never a remote possibility of entering Miami.

I am so happy that Peterson was blown away by Joe's presentation.

Does Peterson get paid to be an advisor or does he do all of this just out of friendship?

I guess Ross didn't want his phones bugged

This is why you don't burn bridges and handle power properly, in life. It will bite you.

Peterson has a better track record than Pioli when comparing the talent in KC. Just a fact.

Peterson is stained by the fact his teams had great regular seasons, but tanked in the playoffs. Plus, his handling of Tony Gonzalez and Jared Allen were less than ideal.

Yea so I guess we can blame Carl for the hire that is not looking very good after year 2. I personally see no reason to be enthused about anything to do with having Philbin as a coach.'

Classic! I am old enough to appreciate that reference!

I think he was a bit of a paranoid nut job as well.

The thing that gets me is, Huizenga brought in Parcells, he brought Ireland. And Parcells actually WON a Superbowl.

Now Ross is listening to Peterson to bring in one of his cronies.

I can't stand this "hire my buddy" bull****.

Bring in the most qualified, most experienced person. Let him bring in his people and hold him accountable.

If you're not going to do that, hire Peterson make him accountable.

As it sits now it's like Peterson play Madden. He can make moves, but ultimately it doesn't cost HIM anything.
