It's certainly good news, and I have good feelings about Hickey, I really do.
I think part of the problem with Ireland and Philbin is that they both wanted to run the ship, and when the losing started, they blamed each other. From what's been said about Philbin, he's not meek by any stretch of the imagination and he has his own agenda and ideas of how things should go. Hickey seems more of a compromiser to me, a smooth-the-wrinkles out kind of person, and he's the perfect guy to come into this chaotic situation and make it work. At the same time he's very experienced, like he says he's been to years of combines and enjoys the experience.
If he comes out of this season with some nice FA pickups and a good draft, he'll get a lot of respect.
Without a doubt, these 2 guys have to work together, and plan together, and our OC needs to do a great job.
It's a little of both, like most Parcells disciples, Ireland took the stance "This is how I want it, and if you have an issue, tough." Now that approach can work, but you have to have the personality and/or credentials to make it work. Ireland had neither.
While some complain about the whole coach and GM being on equal footing, even the GMs with total control do work together with their coach. They aren't going to give him players that the coach and staff don't want. Now some of the frustrations between the two can go on Philbin as well (while I hated Sherman's playcalling, and I understand it's tough to overrule your mentor/close friend, Philbin needed to step up and chance things) but at the end of the day, Ireland and Philbin just ended up butting heads way too often and if they couldn't compromise, Ireland would just do what he wanted.
