Ten tidbits following the conclusion of the Dolphins’ offseason program (and we’ll have a lot, lot more in the next week):

### Knees were an issue for two of the Dolphins’ top free agent pickups this week.
As Pro Football Talk and NFL Network reported today, Knowshon Moreno sat out practice with a knee injury this week and might need arthroscopic surgery, based on what a doctor tells him next week. If he needs the surgery, he likely would be available for preseason games, barring a setback.
Cornerback Cortland Finnegan sat out team drills last week because of a knee issue. But the fact he participated in less grueling work during practice bodes well. Still, it’s an issue worth monitoring, considering the Dolphins’ lack of veteran depth at the position.
Oddly enough, the one free agent who came to the Dolphins with a history of knee issues (Louis Delmas) hasn’t had any problems through the offseason program. Delmas didn’t practice for the Lions last season because of his knees but played in every game after missing eight in 2012 and five in 2011.

### Considering Rishard Matthews had been in Joe Philbin’s doghouse, I found it interesting that when Philbin was asked what stood out to him in the offseason program, the first name he mentioned was Matthews. "Rishard had a really good camp," Philbin said.

Philbin then mentioned four other names: Dallas Thomas, Jelani Jenkins, Jamar Taylor and Will Davis.

Matthews said he and Philbin ironed out their issues during an offseason discussion. Matthews admitted being late to a couple of meetings, among other things.

### Philbin said something about Reshad Jones that I could not recall him saying about any player in his time here. “It’s very noticeable that he’s practicing harder” than a year ago, Philbin said, also noting that Jones is “pursuing the football more consistently.”

### Some have wondered why Miami hasn’t re-signed Dustin Keller, off a serious knee surgery, but keep in mind that the Patriots passed on him after bringing him in for a visit last month.
And while the Dolphins’ backup tight ends aren’t nearly as accomplished as Keller as a receiver (heck, they aren’t even in the same area code), all made plays in the passing game during the offseason program, from starter Charles Clay (no surprise there) to Michael Egnew (got open a lot), to Arthur Lynch (several impressive catches) to Dion Sims. The concern with this group is whether they’re good enough blockers --- an area that isn’t a strength for Keller.

Good to hear that Reshad Jones seems to be taking football more seriously this year. Also I hope our tight ends are good enough. In this new offense maybe Egnew will be a weapon.

This team has lacked a true seam threat for quite awhile now, if Egnew could fill that role it would be incredible

I was reading somewhere that this offense was similar (or he was used similarly) to the one he played in at Missouri. If it is, it ought to help him a lot.

I never understood why Sherman wouldn't split him wide, there was such a focus on his blocking they never had him do what he did well in college

yeah, probably wishful thinking but he did say Egnew has been open

in the 240's it's got a chance if they flex him and he can work the soft zones and underneath quick hitter stuff...260 plus though i can't see it...was surprised he supposedly beat ellerbe though for a td the other day...although the physical jam stuff isn't quite as apparent which he has issues getting off of til the pads come on...

last year he would have never beaten anyone one on one in man coverage...all his production was soft zone stuff on 3rd and long and scheme driven off pa...all 7 catches i think total

whatev...prove me wrong kid...i'll believe it when i see it

Folks were lining up to beat down when I said Egnew might be the backup a couple weeks ago. Funny how things can change.

Report: Knowshon Moreno knee injury is 'bad'
Citing a source who's seen Knowshon Moreno's knee, the National Football Post's Jason Cole reports the issue is "bad."
The source told Cole that Moreno "probably will play" in 2014, but the "issue is how long." It sounds like a potentially degenerative condition, and something that could shorten Moreno's career. He turns 27 next month. Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Moreno will seek a medical opinion next week "to determine if surgery is needed." Moreno may wind up undraft-able in fantasy leagues.

That's all pretty great stuff to hear. I'm sort of reading a bit between the lines in the comments about the TE's. For example, the guy I was most excited about, Sims, just kind of has his name tacked on there with no comment. That tells me he is maybe not doing horribly, but probably not very well at this point.

I sense that Michael Egnew is probably playing for his place on the roster. He has upside because of his athleticism, flexibility and alleged good hands. However, he's still pretty insecure and still dumb as a rock. Lazor is probably looking for precise route running and greater confidence that he can make a contribution. I hope that he can show something at training camp. I expect that Arthur Lynch will be brought along slowly, but if he and Dion Sims start making some decent catches, Egnew becomes more expendable.
We may be in the market to pick up a TE like Keller, if healthy (at a significant discount) or someone else who gets cut.
