MATTHEWS WAITINGDolphins receiver Rishard Matthews, who seems positioned to command more than what Miami might be able to offer, nevertheless says he’s interested in the Dolphins. But he’s awaiting an offer.
Appearing today on WQAM with Joe Rose and Curtis Stevenson, Matthews was asked if he is interested in coming back to the Dolphins.
Yes,” he said. “I voiced that to them a number of times. We've been in talks. They said they want me back. Now it's the wait game, waiting for them.
“I've spoken to everybody I need to talk to to make the decision to come back. It sounds good what direction they're trying to go in. As long as everything is right, I'll be willing to come back. I'm waiting for them.”
But, he said, “We're definitely excited to go into free agency. I was drafted by the Dolphins, I love the organization. I hope things can work out. If not, I'm excited about free agency.”
What is he looking for in free agency, besides money?
“Opportunity,” he told Rose and Stevenson. “Wherever I go, I'm competing to get on the field right away. I don't want to be looked at as anything less than a 2.”
Therein lies the rub. The Dolphins aren’t in position to pay him as a No. 2 when they have DeVante Parker and Jarvis Landry as likely longterm starters. But his return can’t be ruled out, either, even though Matthews said at the end of the season that he was more likely to be elsewhere next season.

Rishard Matthews told @JoeRoseShow that he agreed with Greg Jennings. "Ryan didn't have flexibility to do what he wanted."

umm he isn't a #2 i am sure the front office would let him compete at #3 wish him luck tho shame Philbin didn't use him more.

can't pay him #2 money unless you are gonna make him the #2...and with landry here that won't happen...

I think the poor showing at the combine of some receivers will increase Matthews value on the free agent market, it will also allow Miami to look at a receiver in the mid or late rounds that might make more sense as a number four receiver behind Stills, Parker and Landry. DeRunnya Wilson's 4.8 40 at the combine will chase off a number of teams, and while he's no speedster he's faster than that time suggest. At 6-5 224 he would give Tannehill another big target and Miami could run with Stills, Parker, Landry, Wilson and Hazel if they opt to release Greg Jennings. I would also consider Charone Peake or Keyarris Garrett as draft options. Peake is an intriguing fourth receiver with 4.4 speed at 6'2 210. Peake still has some holes in his game, but you're not asking him to come in as a starter.

I never wanted to re-sign Matthews. Outside of the defense, the only new money I'm willing to give in house is Lamar Miller. I also hoped to restructure Cameron.

Last season Rishard Matthews was effectively our #2 WR until he got injured. His improvement was self evident and he clearly has the best chemistry with Ryan Tannehill. It was Matthews who spent hours every day in last offseason catching passes from Tannehill in the local park. It wasn't Landry or Jennings, it was Matthews. Don't be surprised if Matthews re-signs. Tannehill has probably made his desire to have his guy back.

Pay the man! Restructure TE Cameron - Let Miller Walk -he can't break a tackle.

What has Parker shown to this point that he's better than Matthews? Let alone a number one, I understand potential, but as of know Matthews has proven to be better. I think Matthews needs more opportunity and would be more than fine giving him 3-4 million a year not sure that'd do it though. As of now Parker is grossly overrated due to his draft status. I know he was lame but damn so many first round picks make instant impacts.

Parker is not overrated and it has nothing to do with his draft status...

Landry will also want to be paid as a 1 or 2 soon. Matthews is not a luxury we can afford.

Landry is a slot. The reason why we cant pay Matthews as a 2 and have a beast wr core is because we are too busy paying cam wake and grimes even more money.

Cut those two, resign Matthews and Miller, go defense in the draft and go guard in FA.
