Amid the doldrums and drudgery of June practices, 5-7 receiver Jakeem Grant has left an impression on teammates with his electrifying quickness and demonstrative personality. If the sixth-round pick proves capable of being a No. 5 receiver, then there won’t necessarily be a need to keep a sixth (likely Griff Whalen or Matt Hazel). Grant has made a bunch of catches in offseason practices, while also receiving a lot of opportunities on returns. His work this summer has convinced him that he can get open against NFL defensive backs.

“I’m matched up with safeties that aren’t used to my speed and already have that threat like, ‘Oh my God, this guy’s fast so I can’t let him beat me deep,’” Grant said. “That gives me an edge already and that’s already having them on their heels and having them scared that I’m going to beat them deep. And most of the time, I’m not even going deep. That’s the fun fact about being short. Having that speed and that agility over those guys and being able to open yourself up.”
And what about possibly being jammed at the line? Grant isn’t worried about that, either.
“Being a smaller receiver, we have the quickness over those guys,” he said. “Giving them the illusion I’m going somewhere I’m not. I’ve seen 6-foot receivers get jammed by smaller cornerbacks. If you have the technique down, there’s no way you can get jammed.”

Couple notes from the final practice: Isaiah Pead, elevated in Drake’s absence, showed good burst, on both runs and screen passes…With Cam Wake getting a lot of rest, Terrence Fede’s presence was felt as a pass rusher….

I think Jakeem will be a keeper, his speed will really give opponents headaches in multiple receiver sets.

This kid Grant has the right mindset - I'll give him that.

Interesting that Gase says if you let the players personalities come out, they become better leaders...Joe Philbin was a disaster from the get go.

Great article, Jim.

Liked the Doughty explanation. Gase has a sharp way of speaking and explaining observations. You can see that he's a bright guy, unlike Philbin who was too scared of his own shadow to explain anything. Doughty's accuracy and smarts, plus the release of Logan Thomas, may indicate this kid can be a solid backup. Who knows from there. There are guys like Ryan Fitzpatrick that can emerge. The odds are long but it happens.

Pead showing a burst. Unless we find someone off another team in late cuts, either Pead or D Thomas can make the team. Both were day two picks. I hope Pead can show something because D Thomas is a known entity, and that's not a compliment. Pead has an opportunity.

Dallas Thomas. Yikes. I will believe it when I see it. The previous staff cried wolf on him too many times. At the end of the day, I do not like the kid's makeup on top of his lack of functional strength. He lacks motor, intensity, and toughness. Terrible combo for a guard, where you want a nasty, drooling madman.

Weird he's the type of player other teams especially NE would find a way to isolate on our LBs and or Safeties and kill us with the entire game. I hope we've reached that point where we can do the same to others.

I've never heard Grant speak, but when I read his comments, I can help but read them in Kevin Hart's voice.

Try it.

Thomas, meanwhile, has impressed coaches. “He did a good job [this offseason], kept getting better,” Gase said.

Voodoo in full affect

"... Gase said seventh-round rookie quarterback Brandon Doughty “has made a lot of strides since he’s been here. He seems to find completions. When I look at a lot of our film for three weeks before this week, even when [he’s] wrong [in] where he was going, somehow he completes the football..."

I like the sound of that...

Man I can't wait to watch grant in the preseason. Should get a lot of looks with the 2s and 3s

How Ironic, that Miami used to live throwing screens, and quick passes, and now that has a more aggressive HC that want to tackle the whole field, they have a player whose speed not only can consistently see him get behind defenses deep, but so fast, a quick screen pass to him, could result in huge chunk yardage...just hope they don't fall in love with the short passes like the last coaching staff.

Listened to Gases last Presser says about Brandon Doughty...

"He's made a lot of strikes". "The thing thats interesting, he seems to find completions", when looking at film over last few weeks you see, even when he was wrong, like where he was going, somehow he'd complete the football. he seems to have this knack to see the open guy, asked...."why did you throw the ball there ?, "He's open". .

"He can find completions"... Can't express how nice that is to hear...funny suddenly have interest with his development..

Yea, would be nice to find a diamond in the rough at the QB position.

Sadly I thought Joe would be OK and I tried to find the good in him until the bitter end but looking back that was just me being a fan and wanting the team to win.
