Now the Dolphins are turning their attention to 49ers quarterback Alex Smith, who visited Sunday, and former Jaguar David Garrard, who will visit Monday. The team reportedly has discussed financial terms with Smith.

But Smith, who grew up in California and has a strong relationship with 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh, would have strong incentive not to make a decision until Peyton Manning decides whether to play for the 49ers.

The Dolphins were not inclined to pay Flynn nearly $9 million per season, as Seattle did. The Dolphins wanted Flynn but did not believe he was that much better than Matt Moore to justify a contract in Seattle’s range, said one source who spoke to Miami’s front office.

“They had a difference in evaluation as to his value,” Flynn’s father, Alvin, said of the Dolphins and Seahawks. “We have so much respect for [Dolphins coach] Joe Philbin. But it obviously didn’t work out. He’s excited that it’s done.”

If Smith signs with Miami, he would be the front-runner to start ahead of Moore. Otherwise, Moore has a good chance to be the starter, though Tennessee’s Matt Hasselbeck could factor in if the Titans sign Manning.

“Looks like Miami is going with Moore again,” former Dolphins coach Jimmy Johnson tweeted.
Though the Dolphins privately consider Moore a decent starter, general manager Jeff Ireland last month stressed the importance of “finding a quarterback that can lead us over the hump” and spoke of doing something “bold.” But Ireland does not like to pay players more than what he believes their value to be.

Hasselbeck or Denver’s Tim Tebow, who are both under contract, will become available if Manning signs with the Titans or Broncos, respectively.

If the Dolphins do not sign Smith, they could draft Texas A&M’s Ryan Tannehill with the eighth pick. But NBC’s Peter King said there is now “a good chance Tannehill won’t last until 8 in the first round. So imagine paying the eighth pick, plus something significant to get a guy with questions marks of Tannehill.”

The Cleveland Browns reportedly might take Tannehill fourth overall.

The Dolphins likely would be a viable option for Smith if Manning signs with the 49ers. Smith, who spent five hours with Dolphins coaches and front office staff Sunday, is “upset” with the 49ers for their pursuit of Manning, according to the Sacramento Bee.

The 49ers have proposed a three-year, $24 million contract, plus incentives, for Smith, but reportedly have not given him a contract to sign because they are waiting on Manning, who also is considering Denver and Tennessee.

Finished, done and settled.

Great! I don't want Tannehill, I'd love for the Browns to pick him.

What a nightmare this is shaping up to be. All the enthusiasm over Philbin's press conference has been sucked out like an airplane with a broken window.

Moore could have Rice and Irvin and he's not winning ten games. Enjoy being god ****ing awful for a few more years. Change my ****ing ass.

I personally dont think Cleveland is going to draft tanneyhill , they really wanted RG3 because he is a unique player but not so sure they think Tanneyhill is as special as other players here. Blackmon would be a smarter pick for them

This is one reason I'm semi amazed that posters are talking about if we should draft Tannehill at number 8 when chances are he is going to be gone by then.

The Browns are mad that the Rams did not make a deal with them since they have two 1st round picks this year. I'd be stunned if they do not pull the trigger here.

Good... when Moore gets knocked out in Week one and we bring in VY to QB us the rest of the season we are looking at the top overall pick.

Very depressing off season. The Dolphins have become the girl left at the altar on multiple occassions. If Garrard ends up on this team, oh crap I just vomited in my mouth. Might be dumping the season ticket if this season looks to be as hopeless as it is setting up to be!

We're going into the draft with Moore as the starter. Every team in the league will know we're desperate for a QB so anyone who really likes Tannehill knows all they have to do is trade up in front of us with Jacksonville, if the Browns don't take him which I don't think they will. Reminds me of 2009 when it seemed like every WR was getting picked before our pick and we got stuck with Patrick Turner in the 3rd and Hartline in the 4th. There were 4 WRs in a row, picks 82-85 before our pick (87) in the 3rd cause everyone knew we desperately needed a WR. Pittsburgh traded up to #85 that year to take Mike Wallace.

Wow, finally somebody that understands. Thanks. We didn;t sign Flynn cause Philbin knows him, contrary to a lot of posters here that don't understand why we didn't sign him. You know, the ones that know more then the guy that actually coached him for 4 years.

You guys are such fools and I hope Ireland and company don't fall for this bait. Tannehill is such a stupid reach at 8 it's almost laughable. He's very raw and wont be ready for a 2-3 years, let some other foolish team draft him in the first round. Imagine trading up to get him, talk about a clueless organization. The Dolphins need to draft intelligently this year and not panic.
