Quick 11 a.m. Dolphins note:

Adam Gase said he was pleased the Dolphins were aggressive in signing Chris Culliver and believe he can thrive in man to man, press coverage. Though Gase gave no timetable for his return from a torn ACL/MCL in November, the team would be comfortable potentially starting him on PUP, as Armando reported, which would sideline him six games. Culliver declined to give a timetable but said he might be able to practice in a couple of weeks...

If Miami keeps a 10th defensive back, it could be Chimdi Chekwa, Brandon Harris, Rashaan Melvin or someone in another camp now. Jordan Lucas and AJ Hendy are practice squad options.

• A few other Dolphins items, supplementing our long post from earlier today: Jamil Douglas is one prominent player fighting for his job. Obscure Anthony Steen is ahead of him at backup center, according to the team’s depth chart…

This is going to put a wad in a lot of peoples panties.
Byron Maxwell noted the Dolphins quarterbacks aren't challenging corners down the field, though we saw a couple of deep balls today that were successful (Tannehill to Ajayi, Moore to Carroo). And Gase gave an interesting answer for why he's emphasizing shorter patterns:

"The whole league is 10 yards and under. That’s what it is. Nobody is going down the field like. There’s one team that does it really, maybe two. Pittsburgh and Arizona. Hold onto the ball and they chuck it down the field. More teams than not, it’s 10 yards and under. That’s where all the passing game is. The d-ends are too good. If you want to stand back there and have your quarterbacks get your brains beat out, go at it.

The conversation began when Gase was asked if he would like the offense to go vertical more.

"I’m fine with it. I’m the one scripting the plays, calling the plays. I’ve had a little success with what we do. There’s a time and a place. There’s also a time and a place not to get sacked 60 times in a year, too."

Great point, look at most of Brady's passes. Going vertical should be set up with the run and short passing game

gase is arrogant and I love it

I sure hope it translates to how he calls the game on the field

He got career years out of Manning and Cutler, got a super bowl ring coaching Denvers offense, and has been one of the biggest coaching targets for a couple years. If he says something works on offense and something does not, I'm going to believe him

We all want the exciting down the field passes but I am OK with not getting Ryan sacked 60 times. We have YAC wrs. Also this makes the Carroo pick make more sense. Lets go fins

denver lost that game 43-8

Play action will definitely help out the vertical game and our qb taking less hits. I really like how clear Gase's vision of what he wants his offense to look like while still playing to the players talents.

Wait a sec, Jamil Douglas is fighting for his job over Dallas Thomas??? That's not good for Jamil.

Also, I was originally happy about signing Culliver......then I realized he tore his ACL and MCL last November.

hate it or love it you gotta respect his candor on offensive philosophy
