Sports Buzz Wednesday 8-13

There should be ZERO concern about Matthews' roster spot. He, Gibson, and Landry are the best fits for this offense, and they're all at least capable WR's - with the ability to play the 1, 2, or 3. Given that we want to spread the field and play Wallace at different spots, you'd like to keep all three, and it's not like we'd be dropping better players to keep them on the roster.

McCain is another player who shouldn't be in question. He might not be ready to start, but he's a lot closer to besting guys like Ellerbe and Wheeler than he is to losing his spot to our other scrub LB's. He and Tripp have the most potential of the LB's we have on the roster. If he's not ready, so what? We spend years trying to develop assholes like Daniel Thomas. I'm sure we can keep McCain for at least another season to see how he develops.

not looking good for D Thomas and Egnew, but they had (more than)enough chance. Pretty bad when UDFA's outperform them after a couple weeks on the team

Time to get the trash out of here.

then RT goes down in week 5, and then we do what? Rely on Lobato or Quinn? Hello first pick in the draft.....

If your starter goes down, season = over.

Binns has done nothing this training camp and you have barely seen Landry play, so the assumption that he's automatically better than Gibson is just absurd.

You will quickly realize how absurd your post is...and I'll remind you when Landry replaces him in the lineup.

Not yet he isn't. Maybe he turns into a better one but as of right now he has yet to catch a pass in a regular season game. Gibson has proven he can beat NFL defenses play after play when they matter most, 3rd down. When Landry leads the league in 3rd down % then we can have this conversation, but right now Landry is a player full of potential that has caught exactly 0 NFL passes and only one preseason pass. I don't think anyone but a few delusional dolphin fans are going to confuse him with Jerry Rice.

There's nothing delusional about the fact that Gibson is a pedestrian talent who will not be a starter much longer on this team.

I like him for cheap depth, nothing in his resume in college or the pros suggests he is special.........Unlike Landry.

While I am a huge fan of Landry and am a believer that he is going to be something special in this league, the title of "pedestrian" given to Gibson is a bit harsh. Regardless of anything on his resume prior to Miami, since he has been here he has proven himself to be far more than pedestrian. He has been as solid as it gets.

So you consider averaging about 4 receptions a game for about 40 yards a game extraordinary?

I also don't consider a player who plays less than half the season due to injury "solid"....injuries can happen to anybody but durability is always a concern.

If he had stayed healthy...his numbers extrapolate to 68 catches for 685 yards....fairly pedestrian in a pass happy league.

IF Gibson goes, we take a $2M cap hit, and save $1.7M but, his place on the roster will cost around $500K. Our net savings would be $1.2M, which is nothing. I don't know what his trade value is now but, have to believe it would be higher if a team has injury problems later. I'm still all for keeping him.

For a third or fourth wide out behind Wallace , Hartline and possible Landry i'd take those numbers any day. Throw in 5 or 6 TD's and that's not a bad stat line at all. Remember Clay and the RB's are going to get lots of passes as well in Lazors offence.

Yes.....absolutely, but from the starting slot receiver it is not special.

That was really the point I was trying to make. His lower numbers were not from a lack of talent, rather just lack of opportunity. He got open and caught everything thrown at him. That isn't pedestrian.

The thing I like is that for his 30 catches last year Gibson got in the endzone 3 times. For prospective Hartline had 4 TD's and Wallace 5 on more than double the receptions. Already in preseason he's got one. The kid has a nose for the endzone and we need that. If Landry develops like we all think he will there will be some tough decisions next year but for now I like Gibson in the slot ... at least to start the season.
