I don't know if I am the only one who keeps hearing about how badly Spurrier did in Washington and Saban is likely not to succeed because it is hard for a college coach to transition to the pros?... blah, blah, blah

Does anyone remember how Spurrier couldn't keep off the golf course? I just think Saban's work ethic and intensity is way beyond Spurrier's. Let me know what you guys and gals think. Maybe I am just biased I guess.
 
Spurrier went from College to NFL, Saban went from nfl to college to nfl, so he knows what he is doing.
 
I don't think anyone has said saban won't succeed b/c Spurrier didn't succeed but many of the same expectations were on Spurrier that are now on Saban. Spurrier was a more successful college coach and he failed but that doesn't mean Nick will fail but success is not guaranteed.
 
Saban should be better than Spurrier, but Sabans prior NFl experiance isn't going to be that big an advantage...

How long ago was it? I'm pretty sure Joe Gibbs was still coaching last time Saban was on an NFl sideline, alot has changed since then.

Spurrier did PLAY in the NFL for a long time.

It was so long ago that belichick was a failure as a HC :D . It was a while ago but Gibbs was not coaching, I think saban's last year was '94 and Gibbs left after '92.

I don't believe he did but he did coach in the USFL.

Actually, I think the only winning season Belichick had before Weis and Crennel got there was when Saban was the DC of the Browns.

Belichick is sooooo over rated its not even funny.
 
Also, Spurrier had an owner in Synder or whatever his name was, trying to be a coach along with being an owner. Synder would go out and pay a chit load of money for players without seeing if the players fitted the mold that Spurrier was trying to create.

As long as Saban keeps doing what he is doing now with how he handles things, the media shouldn't get in his head and affect his coaching.
 
I don't know if anyone watched any of the LSU games last year, but they ran an NFL program under Saban, not to mention the guy coached in the NFL.

Its a stupid comparison for many reasons but I will give you a few....First of all spurrier came to the NFL to prove his offensive "system" would work at that level (NFL) the "fun and gun" is crap he wanted to fit his players to his system and not vice versa and on a team full of big slow wide recievers it failed miserably...he wanted nothing to do with the D or O-line or any other aspect of the team other than the offensive skill positions.. he wasnt a head coach he was a glorified offensive coordinator. Saban has been an outstanding Defensive coordinator in the NFL and and outstanding HEADcoach at the colledge level.
 
These days being involved with the redskins and spectacular failure go hand in hand... Saban will be fine

Come on now, don't turn this into something to be in the smack forum, this is a decent convo thread about something other then Ricky and Ronnie. Ny is giving some good background info.
