just watched the tape. here's who stood out to me.

the left side of the oline. jake long and justin smiley were getting to the 2nd level on run plays. both also played well in pass pro.

the starting oline as a whole. no sacks. 3 first or 2nd year players. nice job.

the front 3 on defense. merling played a heck of a game. much better job of standing up linemen and shedding blockers and getting to the ball carrier. looked much better than last week. kendall langford plays very well at the point of attack. these 2 are gonna be great players for us. ferguson was what he's been in camp pretty much. paul solai was dominant at times and seemed to have better stamina and showed great push. randy starks was solid. the only guy that seemed to regress was rod wright. didn't see much from him.

chad henne. color me officially on the chad henne bandwagon. the roll out accuracy was impressive he threw some beautiful balls. just needs time. definitely the future. i loved how he went from one side of the field to the other in progressions. nicely done. got away with a couple floaters that had he put a little more on could have gone for big gains. throws a beautiful deep ball. the intermediate and short passing decisions i thought were excellent. i only saw 1 ball that was forced and that was the short crossing route to bess that mathis jumped late.

kicker carpenter 4-4. what else can you ask for??? maybe to kick the ball a little deeper on kickoffs.

ted ginn jr. showed nice toughness on a catch between defenders over the middle. on the 1st catch had chad pennington had a little more arm he may still be running. seems to be developing nicely. made plays on a very good corner rashean mathis.

boomer grigsby. i thought he blocked very well both in the running game and pass pro. caught the ball when thrown to. i was shocked cause i've never been a grigsby guy. also looked active on specials.

the attitude. the mindset. it's different and i love it.

now the bad.

the olb position. no sustained pass rush from the olb position. porter i saw gain the edge a few times but he never touched a qb. quentin moses was washed out and neutralized from what i saw. matt roth is matt roth he's never gonna sustain anything as a rusher with just a bullrush. no speed off the edge. did have the lone sack of the night. the bottom line is the front 3 nt and ends generate more pass rush than the olbs. not good. gonna make our secondary look weak if it continues.

the 2nd team oline. didn't allow any sacks which is good but didn't really create any running lanes either. needs upgrading

the special teams coverage units. supposed to be a strength right now looks like a weakness. carpenter got to halp them and kick the ball deeper on kicks. too many yards given up on returns.

overall very impressed. actually excited about the season for the first time in quite a while.

I agree with everything but I think Porter did a better job then your giving him credit for. And how could you not mention Chad Pennington as one of your standouts. He did great on the drives he was out there for.

i thought porter was ok. he gained the edge a few times but never got to the qb. if he's weakside with matt roth opposite at olb he's got to create pass rush. he didn't really so he didn't stand out to me.

as far as penny i thought he played well. pretty much what i expected from an established veteran qb facing vanilla defenses in a preseason game. he was solid no doubt but don't you expect solid game from a long time starting veteran qb in a preseason game??? i do.

Yes....but preseason or not, he did well against the Jags starting D.

I think Pennington did pretty well when you compare him to Garrard. Wasn't he something like 7/14 for 50 yards and no points? Pennington helped put up 10, which is more than all three QB's against Tampa Bay.

Nice take; as another standout, I'd add Ricky based on his elusiveness and the renewed spring in his step.

I think Penny and Ricky played very well also. You said if Chad had a "little more arm." He almost over threw that pass, Ginn had to up and get it. It was a very nice pass with more zip than i have seen from him in a while. For a rookie Henne is very impressive. Chowder played well also.

I would say the Offense in general no turnovers and Had the ball for 37+ mins last game amazing what a winner under center can do for your team/confidence.I agree abotu your downpoints except maybe the special teams i think that we dont have our return people yet we took a chance on Foster who knows who will be back there at the start of the season Ginn maybe parmele i think that will get fixed fast

just saw Jake get schooled by Spicer

a good lesson for the rook

No turnovers, Paul Solai (what the hell did he eat saturday morning?) 355 lbs. WOW, that would be nice. Camarillo had a beautiful comeback block to spring Peele down the sideline for a long gainer. Camarillo also catches the ball. I think he stays.

Ginn, Hagan, Bess, Wilford, Camarillo - I would run with that

Backup OL scares me. Henne looks like he knows how to move the ball but still has lots to learn on hurry up and clock management. he got chewed a couple of times by coach and it kind of slid off him and got back in there and showed stuff. Love his demeanor.

Our defense will be tougher for sure. That gets us 4 of those close games last year. The offense and Chads will get us 4 more. This team has more talent than people realize. Yeremiah Bell still looking good. Hoping Lehan can show up to give us stout DB's to do the job.

TE's need work but Penne will get them going or they will not see the rock. simple as that. Ronnie/Ricky will tear it up and wear teams down in fourth qtr. Passing game hitting on quick hits for first downs. Overcame penalties with big plays. That is how you beat the refs and start winning, then gain their respect. Total different team. One more draft like this year and we will be going deep in playoffs. Need more LB's. Roth gives us some big boy tude at that spot. We are not even playing with our best guys alot of the time. (Porter, Holliday, Lehan, ect.)
