Tua time!
just watched the tape. here's who stood out to me.
the left side of the oline. jake long and justin smiley were getting to the 2nd level on run plays. both also played well in pass pro.
the starting oline as a whole. no sacks. 3 first or 2nd year players. nice job.
the front 3 on defense. merling played a heck of a game. much better job of standing up linemen and shedding blockers and getting to the ball carrier. looked much better than last week. kendall langford plays very well at the point of attack. these 2 are gonna be great players for us. ferguson was what he's been in camp pretty much. paul solai was dominant at times and seemed to have better stamina and showed great push. randy starks was solid. the only guy that seemed to regress was rod wright. didn't see much from him.
chad henne. color me officially on the chad henne bandwagon. the roll out accuracy was impressive he threw some beautiful balls. just needs time. definitely the future. i loved how he went from one side of the field to the other in progressions. nicely done. got away with a couple floaters that had he put a little more on could have gone for big gains. throws a beautiful deep ball. the intermediate and short passing decisions i thought were excellent. i only saw 1 ball that was forced and that was the short crossing route to bess that mathis jumped late.
kicker carpenter 4-4. what else can you ask for??? maybe to kick the ball a little deeper on kickoffs.
ted ginn jr. showed nice toughness on a catch between defenders over the middle. on the 1st catch had chad pennington had a little more arm he may still be running. seems to be developing nicely. made plays on a very good corner rashean mathis.
boomer grigsby. i thought he blocked very well both in the running game and pass pro. caught the ball when thrown to. i was shocked cause i've never been a grigsby guy. also looked active on specials.
the attitude. the mindset. it's different and i love it.
now the bad.
the olb position. no sustained pass rush from the olb position. porter i saw gain the edge a few times but he never touched a qb. quentin moses was washed out and neutralized from what i saw. matt roth is matt roth he's never gonna sustain anything as a rusher with just a bullrush. no speed off the edge. did have the lone sack of the night. the bottom line is the front 3 nt and ends generate more pass rush than the olbs. not good. gonna make our secondary look weak if it continues.
the 2nd team oline. didn't allow any sacks which is good but didn't really create any running lanes either. needs upgrading
the special teams coverage units. supposed to be a strength right now looks like a weakness. carpenter got to halp them and kick the ball deeper on kicks. too many yards given up on returns.
overall very impressed. actually excited about the season for the first time in quite a while.
