I’m not sure if this is the right place for this, but I think most of you will know him from his college days as a starting CB for Florida State. He’s in the CFL now and starting for Winnipeg and doing ok, but his draft numbers are non-typical for a CFL CB so I’m curious about him. In general terms CFL CBs are smaller and faster than NFL CBs. They don’t need to be as big because we don’t use TEs in the CFL game and most of our RBs are scatbacks, and therefore not as big as NFL backs, on average. So we get a lot of players who are very fast and outstanding cover guys but too small or not durable enough for the NFL game. Samuels is about the same size as other CFL CBs, but his pre draft 40 time was extremely slow for a CFL CB. So I’m wondering if anybody knows if he was injured prior to his draft year. Is he a speed guy who for some reason put up a bad numbers before his draft?

He played with alot of heart @ FSU, just didn't have enough speed to cover the deep ball, he was constantly getting beat deep. He could probably make it as a 3rd down nickel back, but that would be it.

Thanks for the info guys! :) I predict that he won’t last long as a CFL CB then. I don’t know of many or any successful CFL CBs who don’t have at least low 4.4 speed. There is another CB with a very high listed 40 time who is starting for Hamilton this year who you may know about as well, Tay Cody. His draft info has him at a 4.6 40! In the CFL we have receivers like former Dolphin Albert Johnson III, and other 4.3 range players you may have heard of like R. Jay Soward, Tony Simmons, Aaron Lockett and Kareem Kelly, and we have almost all roll out QBs, and the field is 65 yards wide, so there is a lot of room and with all the rolling out plays last longer on average than NFL plays, so a DB has to chase his guy around longer and he really needs the speed, but as I explained above he doesn’t need as much size or duality as NFL DBs do. Cody is obviously a highly skilled player, but if that 40 time is accurate he’s going to get burned fairly regularly.

Oh, and Almondo Curry is another player I’m interested in if anyone remembers him. :)

Here’s an update on your scouting report. Good call. Samuels was recently moved to dime back and replaced on the corner by former Mississippi State grad Robert Bean, who was also a 5th round draft pick of the Bengals in 2000 and kicked around the NFL for a while before heading north last year. He was cut by the BC Lions in training camp last year but got his shot with Winnipeg this year and is making the most of it.
