Dolphins fans booed their team's decision to choose Ohio State's Ted Ginn last month because they knew spending the ninth overall pick on someone who could be primarily a return specialist was shortsighted. If Ginn doesn't turn out to be a front-line receiver, he might have a brief career.

Makes sense. If Ginn doesn't become a more consistent WR (and get healthy first), he could be a flash in the pan. Being a WR in college is one thing, being a WR is something else and Ginn will need to rise to the challenge. He needs to be more Santana Moss than Dante Hall.

Anyone who thinks that the Fins FO and coaching staff thinks Ginn is just a return specialist is ******ed. The coaching staff will get the ball in this guy's hands right way. Screens, reverses, slants, go-patterns will all be in the playbook early on. He will work on his route running at the same time. Whether he turns into an elite receiver remains to be seen, but certainly that is the plan.

Qouted for truth

I'm reasonably sure Randy and Cam see Ted Ginn as more than just a return man.

It seems to me that the "talking heads" feel compelled to criticize the Ginn selection because they were all so sure there was no way we didn't want Brady Quinn. They have to save face for being wrong by criticizing the Dolphins.

The fact is, two other teams were going to take Gin in the top 13, so it was no reach, but the term "reach" is perception anyway.

The fact is, they were not in on the plan, just as they didn't know Vernon Carey was being moved to LT, so some have criticized not getting a LT.

The Dolphins clearly didn't want Brady Quinn, and they had no designs on drafting a LT.

the knock on ginn is he has very raw WR skills. Even WR who are good and have tremendous production in college stumble alot in NFL.
SO all it will take is put him in deep route once or twice a game and let him learn and polish skill over 2-3 yr period .

The way I have heard it Mueller tried to trade down out of the 9th position of the first round in the draft. If that is true it means that either Muller/Cam thought Ginn would be available later in the draft or they also had someone else targeted later in the draft other than Ginn. I do not think they whole heartly beleived Ginn was worth the 9th pick in the draft they just did not have any other choice.

Actually, I heard that Mueller and Cam wanted to trade back into the first round after the Ginn selection to pick up Beck.

I do somewhat agree and hope you are right, but Cameron came out sounding kind of moronic when he introduced Ginn as our pick and basically started the convo talking about his punt returning. Kind of like taking a TE in the first round and the first thing you hear is he is a great longsnapper.

The health more than likely is not an issue. It may be right at this moment, but he'll be in TC and ready by the seasons start for the real plays. Absolutely, there is an adjustment from college WR to NFL WR, but that is true of EVERY rookie coming into the league.

Your thread title is a little misleading...if you're concerned that he'll be nothing more than a return specialist and that his effectiveness is limited to a certain number of years, it seems unlikely. he can impact the team immediately as a returner and as he develops as a WR, he'll probably get fewer and fewer returns, although that won't be this year probably...While we don't know the future, so how he develops as WR is going to be key, but surely there is no way Ginn was drafted #9 strictly as a returner...

What we will see, at least to start with will be some wrinkles in the offense that utilize his unique speed and skills that will electrify this team. This will be something like we haven't seen here since Marino and the Marks brothers were lighting up the scoreboard.....

We will probably never know the real truth, but I heard they tried and failed to move up late in the first round to possibly get Beck, which led me to believe that even though they liked Beck, the original plan was not Beck in the second round.

The kid will probably be able to read defenses better than any of the other receivers on the field. Remember, he played CB and his dad is a coach. With a good relationship with our qbs/Beck, that tandem will be unstoppable. Lets just hope everyone else is buying into the philosophy of strong chemistry Cam is trying to create.
