Now i know that he plays DE but he is 6-3 305 add 5-10 LBS and he could easily be a dominate NT..this is if Solai, Ellis, Cohen, our a future draft pick cant do it could we try him at NT

What yall guys or gals think?

Just because you have the measurements to play a position does not mean that you'll dominate it. Just ask Wilford. With that said, I agree they should line him up with the 1st or 2nd team and see how he does.

starks seems to playing at a 305, maxed out

his ideal weight IMO would be a little less, and he is a typical 4-3 3 technique... but he plays 5 technique very well in our scheme. but at NT he's undersized and is not at his best at all, JMO ... We've seen a few snaps of him playing NT this year and it wasn't real pretty

You're right but, to be fair, Starks also hadn't practiced at NT at all up until that game. I still think it will be Soliai in the end, though.

I wish Starks could handle nose tackle because he is more talented than Ferguson and its insulting to even mention Solai with him as a player but he has not shown he can man the middle. The only time he has seemed to manhandle anybody is with his girlfriend.

That's not really fair when you consider that his 27.0% win rate was among the highest in the league against runs that went his direction. KC Joyner said that 20% is really good for a DL.

Sparano has consistently called him the best DE against the run, so they may start to think about having him play the nose a little more. He had to make a tough mental transition from one-gap schemes to the two-gap scheme. Now that he's getting more comfortable with it, I think that lends itself toward more position flexibility.

NT is not just about how much a person weighs, they have to be Defensive line "Heavy" not just weight heavy, they have to be strong as hell. Perhaps Starks can fill that role, but I'm not sure he's a natural nose?

He's also the best pass rushing d-lineman Miami has, which makes him much more valuable than most people think of him.

Starks imo will end up starting at one of the DE's spots and will play NT at times.
Chubbs

i agree, i can see him beating out merling at DE
[iam not sure how merling holds up against the run?]

and in some nickel/dime packages i see him[starks] and mcDaniel[maybe merling] as our DT`s

What happened to Rodrique Wright....Dude dominated at DT in college and was supposed to be a pick in the first 3 rounds and fell to us in rd 7 ibecause of an injury he was playing with as a senior at Texas (BTW still dominating while injured) in '07...Why is he not getting a chance to be our Back-up NT...Is he too small, even so, i am hoping he's better than McDaniel. Anyone hear anything about Rod Wright???

Inactive for all 16 games in 2008 and now threatened to be supplanted by Lionel Dotson and Tony McDaniel as development players.

For Rodrique Wright to continue to call Miami home in a few months, he must not allow Lionel Dotson and Tony McDaniel to be considered better than him.

He should be playing for a 4-3 defense anyway. I'd love to trade him for a late round pick after some preseason performances.

Starks played some NT in our first Baltimore game, when Furgeson was injured and Soliai suspended. He played awful when lined up over the C. I think he was blown off the ball every time.

That's really not accurate. He didn't make enough plays himself but he was not moved off the ball as easily as you say and there were occasions where he gave Jason Brown fits.

The Dolphins didn't do their job defending the run that day, especially in the fourth quarter, but when you take a Randy Starks away from DE because you lose a Jason Ferguson, the net effect is you've basically lost a good run defender in Jason Ferguson and you've not added anyone to the mix to replace him. Vonnie Holliday was only a mediocre run defender, Kendall Langford was still very inconsistent especially to that point of the season, and Phil Merling hadn't met a run play that he could defeat yet.

With Jason Ferguson healthy, Randy Starks was able to help solidify the run blocking from the DE position while Ferguson solidified it from the NT position. Kendall Langford steadily improved in this area. If we were to lose Ferguson, we would just have to hope that Merling and Langford can be a lot better than they were against Baltimore in Week 7...and that Randy Starks could get use to the position a little more.

Either way, it's not accurate to say Starks was "awful" at NT in place of Ferguson. As I recall in that game, the Ravens had a lot of success bouncing runs to the outside. That's really not where Randy Starks as the NT is going to have the most effect on the play.
