Hello Everyone,
Happy Monday!
We are one day removed from the greatness that is the NFL Draft. There are tons of discusions/arguments about who we drafted and I really dont want this post to be another one of those.
I want to look at the bigger picture of where we stand as an organization and Team. Position by Position
I think their are many things we can take from this offseason moves so far this year and many things we learn from our draft style.
So here goes:
Chubby's Post Draft SOTU
Part 1
1st, there is no doubt that we are in phase 2 of our 3 phase reconstruction to greatness. Phase 1(Free Agency 2008) was the total overhaul phase, get rid of everyone expendable and bring in 2nd to 3rd tier guys who are cheap and could kick start the rebuilding process. These guys are closer to our trifecta's player type. This phase also includes drafting from the inside out. Last year we started the process with the Jake Long as our 1st pick and continued with the selections of Merling, Langford and Thomas. We also brought in Smiley through FA. We completed this phase in this years FA with the resigning of Carey and the addition of Grove and Berger.
Now we are in phase 2, this phase is the replacement of the 2nd and 3rd tier guys with Specific Players who fit the mold (notice almost everyone drafted was over 6 foot and graded as a tough guy). There is no doubt in my mind these are mold type players. Phase 2 is only as successful as your draft.
Phase 3 will becomming next year, when they will go after Key Free Agents and Target very specfic positions, they will be top level players. They will be looking for players who will instantly come in and get us over the hump in our push for the superbowl.
Part 2
So now that the draft has come and gone what did we learn? Where do we stand position by position, here is my breakdown:
QB
*Pennington is still our #1. Henne is still our #2(and our future) and Pat White is our #3
*Beck will be traded or cut sometime this offseason
*Pat White will compete with Henne for competion purposes but its Henne's job to lose. Henne is still our guy and still slated to be ready to start in 2010. If Pat White can unseat Henne then we have either made a mistake with Henne or hit a gold mine with Pat White. It's a win win.
*When and how Pat White Plays will be discussed later.
RB
*Our Offense will Run Alot!
*The Trifecta is more then happy with our RB situation. RB and RW should have a much more effective year then last with the tremendous revamp of our OL.
*Cobb- Everything we saw from him last season goes to show me that the trifecta will have alot more packages specifically built to use special advantages that Cobb provides an offense. He is a tremendous receiver out of the backfield for a RB.
*RB will be a restricted FA this comming offseason, expect him to have a blow out year.
*We also have 1 of our draft picks from last year sitting on the PS.
WR
*This will be a WR by commitee.
*Should look like this; Possesion Reciver,Speed Reciever, Slot Receiver.4th reciver could be another Possesion reciever. Dont think we are worrying about one guy being the #1 guy.
*We drafted Turner, Heartline both are the same time of guy, big possesion guy. Throw in Wilford and London and we have 4 guys who will fight it out to be our big posssion guy and possibly our 4WR during our 4 WR sets.
*Ginn-Still not #1 worthy, but our definate speed guy from this unit. I think many call him a possible bust because they expect him to be that elite guy since he was drafted #9. It is not his fault where he was drafted, once he slips into his correct role I think you will see him blossom. Think how Reggie Wayne fit with Harrison as the #1. Regardless if we get a true #1 or not, he needs another guy to garnish the double teams to open him up.
*Camarillo/Bess- Both are the same type player, I think when its all said and done Camarillo will not be in a fins Uni come 2010 (hate to say it as I am a fan). Bess is a true playmaker, great hands and runs crisp routes.
* Throw in White and our RB's when they line up at the WR slot and we should defiantely see a huge upgrade to our passing game.
TE
*Both are Free Agents this year.
*Fasano and Martin both played outstanding for us last year.
*Haynos-The Trifecta have said a few times they have high hopes for this guy. With a full offseason with our QB's I am hoping he improves his route running and beefs up some. Possibly a gem waiting to shine. Very Very Tall Guy.
*John Nalbone -Drafted in fifth round. Was hurt some last year as such he slipped some in this draft. Like Haynos Very Big target. Difference is this guy likes to block and does it well.
*Expect Fasano to be resigned next offseason and Haynos and Nalbone to fight it out for #2 TE.
*I Love the TE position and Love Fasano, If he improves further this year we might see some big numbers this year from him.Penny loves Fasano as a big target.
OL
*With all the offseason moves this year, its more then evident that we will be a Punch you in the mouth, push you back and we are running down your throats type offense.
*The Passing Game will compliment our Run Game.
*Long,Smiley,Grove,Thomas,Carrey should be our starters. I expect big things from these guys but they must stay healthy. They expect Thomas to continue where he left off last year before his injury.
*Murphy-Rumors are that he has been hard at work so far this offseason and the Trifecta expect him to compete for a backup position and be viable if Smiley or Thomas go down again. Unless one of these 3 really shine this offseason, I beleive the fins will draft or bring in a LG to replace Smiley next year.
DL
*I beleive the Trifecta truly targetted a Nose Tackle but none fell that they targetted. I dont think they are done with this position yet.I truly beleive that the Trifecta are happy with the progress of some NT backups, but are looking for them to make the next step. This could possibly be Fergys last year or maybe 1 more.
*Merling/Langford showed enough last year that the earned their Starting role.
*This unit should be stronger and much improved over last year.
ILB
*Crowder was a key resigning this offseason, while he may not be one of the biggest playmakers, he is definately the QB of the defense, learned tons from Zach and is as prepared for an opponent as Chad Pennington is on offense. We definately could upgrade our other ILB spot but Ayodele is serviceable for now.
*JD Folsom(OLB) was drafted in the 7th round, he is considered a project guy and will be moved to ILB.
OLB
*Trifecta are more satisfied with where they stand with this unit then the media portrays them out to be.
*Porter- Well he is porter, oustanding 2008 and I expect him to have another good year. I beleive he has another 2-3 years left in him.
*Roth-Was very servicable last year. Has a very strong and effective Bullrush. 5 sacks, not bad for a guy who we all thought was going to be cut before last preseason. Its very imperative that he progresses this offseason with his pass coverage. Trifecta higher on this guy then people think.
*Wake-He should transition well into the NFL this time arouond but I beleive it will take a few games maybe a full year.
*JT-I think the door is now officially open for him to come back. That whole ACORN comment has Jason Taylor written all over it. Now they just need to come to an agreement as to $ and his commitment to our offseason program. This is what it comes down to.
CB
*We drafted both Vontae Davis and Sean Smith, Both are big and physical, the exact type of CB that Trifecta Loves. Which Leaves me to my next point
*Will Allen-2009 will be his last year. Only reason he is still on our team is his contract and is cheap and he will man our other CB position this year until S.Smith is ready to step in opposite of Davis.
*V Davis-I will not lie I was rooting for M. Jenkins to fall to us. But I am happy we got Davis. He was by far the most complete CB in this draft. Why did I want Jenkins then? Well I have a thing for playmakers. Davis is very physical and will make plays on the ball when needed. I dont care about the character issues. 1. I am sure it was addressed already with the trifecta 2. Sprano nor Parcells will put up with it. So that goes out the window. I expect him to start from day 1. Possible Rookie of the year honors. He will be going against some big receivers this year and if he is the real deal trust me the league will notice.
*S. Smith-TALLLL 6'4. Got love it. He is still very raw as a CB, just moved over a few years ago from WR. Has the advantage of understanding WR routes zones etc.... Should take half a year to 1 year to get him ready to start opposite Davis.
*Jason Allen project is over. This may be his last year as a fin. Will have to beat out a few players for the Nickel spot.
*Trifecta are high on Barbers and Thomas. Should see improvment this year.
Safety
*This position is set for a few years to come. Wilson and Bell make a formidable pair as any in the league. Wilson is the big hitter while Bell is no stranger to contact, he definately is a playmaker as well. They will automatically make our CB's better and help the transition to the rookies.
*Culver tallish guy who will need step up to earn his backup role.
*Chris Clemons was drafted for depth. Tallish guy who is not afraid to bump heads as well.
Pat White
I will copy and paste and earlier post i made which summs it up perfectly.
*This guy would not have been there for our 2b pick. Fins wanted him and they got him.
*He will be our 3rd string QB, he will line up at times as a WR,RB and anywhere else that gets him on the field.
*If anything this picks tells me, the dolphins now, can officially run almost any play an any offensive playbook. Defenses are going to hate game planning for us.
*I dont care that he was picked at 2a rather then 2b. All I care is the trifecta are gauranteeing us that next years offense will be as innovative as this last years.
*The guy has special Skills which there is no denying, I am not saying that he can line up and be an ever down WR or RB, But I am saying he will line up at all these positions and we will put the ball in his hands. Whether he throws catches or runs with it will be decided soon enough.
*Forget about where he was drafted, and focus on the asset and possibilities our offense just gained.
Lets Sum it Up
*This is not the Cameron nor Wanny ERA. We have Football guys making the decisions now. They have all been succesful in the past and are working together in beautiful Harmony. So have Faith that there is actually a plan in place now for every position and every decision. Use the CB potion as an example we were all worried that they just werent jumping on any Free Agents and there was noone opposite Will Allen who was worth a penny, Not that W Allen was much better. And look what they did with the draft.
*2009 is looking to be an exciting year. Positions are being settled and there should be a step up in the quality of play all around.
*I feel that we will of course unleash new wrinkles to our Wildcat that has not been seen or done before. But not only this. I have a feeling that we are going to be seeing tons and tons of formations and plays from our offense that will keep defenses scratching their heads all year. It wouldnt even suprise me to see some type of option play a few times this year. Anythign is possible and this excites me.
I am sure there are tons of spelling and gramatical erros, I am no english major and type to quickly for my own good, please take the post at face value. This is where I feel we stand and where I feel we are going as a team.
These are my opinions and I am entitled to them, as you are to yours. I ask you all to be respectful in reply :)
