“On the 40th anniversary of the greatest season in NFL history – Don Shula’s perfect ’72 Dolphins – it is perfectly fitting that Hard Knocks is heading to Miami to capture the start of a new era for one of the league’s proudest teams,” said NFL Films president Steve Sabol. “After Hard Knocks’ hiatus last summer, I know our team at NFL Films can’t wait to get back on the field.”

After several teams declined to appear and many questions about why any team would want to do it, we finally know who will appear on this summer’s installment of Hard Knocks: The Miami Dolphins.

The Dolphins announced today that they have agreed to appear on the HBO series that chronicles one NFL team’s training camp. The show will air weekly, beginning on Tuesday, August 7.

From a business perspective, the move makes sense: As local interest in the team has waned, Dolphins owner Stephen Ross has made clear that he wants his team to generate more buzz. The team that appears on Hard Knocks is always one of the most-discussed teams in the NFL in August.

And from a storytelling perspective, the producers of Hard Knocks will find plenty of storylines to explore, such as new coach Joe Philbin running a training camp for the first time and a three-man quarterback competition featuring incumbent Matt Moore, first-round draft pick Ryan Tannehill and free agent signing David Garrard all in the mix.

The biggest question, however, is whether the Dolphins are interesting enough for many football fans to care about their training camp. Coming off three straight losing seasons, the Dolphins aren’t one of the league’s marquee teams. That makes this announcement something of a surprise.

HELL

YES!

Lets get this season rolling. Haven't been this excited for my Phins in lord knows how long. New coach, new tempo, new attitude.

AH!!!! LETS GO FINS!!

Dolphins coach Joe Philbin announced the team would be the subject of HBO’s celebrated behind-an-NFL-training-camp-scenes show Hard Knocks moments before refusing to discuss why the team’s biggest celebrity, running back Reggie Bush, wasn’t at Tuesday’s OTA practice.

“No. 1, it was a football decision,” Philbin said. “It was made by the football operations staff. Our owner [Stephen Ross] supported this decision, but in no way shape or form forced us to make the decision.

SURE.................................

P.S. Someone with HBO please remember "The Pirate Bay".......

who cares let PFT hate, I'm sure if the jets or falcons chose to do it PFT would be all over their nuts, we need the exposure and the excitement back, I'm still a little worried about it but I love the business move by ross!

For the sake of us die-hard fans, this type of filming should be MANDATORY in every Training Camp, leaving out tactics of course...but it should be part of the televised experience nevertheless...Free? Maybe not, maybe as part of the NFL ticket, you get to choose your team´s version, but it should be aired IMO!!

I'm on both sides of the fence. I would love to watch it and see everything that I can about the Dolphins but I dont think it helps the team on the field. If anything it may hurt the team some. It could help get some more fans and sell tickets, I'm sure that is the hope. I will watch and love every minute of it.

If it can hurt the team, it can help as well. I don't agree it will hurt the team at all but you have to talk about both (not one without the other).

Sorry but I think this is a terrible idea. This is the worst thing to do to a 1st year rookie head coach. It stinks of a Ross only move.

This will help ticket sales. That is about all it will do for the football team. Add this to "Star" part owners and all games being later in the day or at night for the fan's comfort.

As real fans, we will enjoy watching it however.

There is no way that our new coaches wanted this.

P.S as far as us being "exciting"......We were like the 20th team they asked. In fact, they were getting desperate to get anyone.

I wonder how much Ross is getting paid for it.

Sounds like Philbin & his staff pushed for it. Not Ross....

Philbin said there was no pressure from owner Steve Ross to do the show, and that the football operations staff made the decision with Ross's support. That's not to say there were not concerns.
"He was probably more worried about (this) being my first time as a head coach," said Philbin, who claimed he has never seen an episode. "...Myself, I think it's a better time to do this as a opposed to Year 2 or Year 3."
