Stay, go or restructure: DT Earl Mitchell
Experience: Six seasons
2015 stats: 22 tackles
2016 salary/cap charge: $3 million, $3.5 million cap
Analysis: Mitchell had his toughest season to date with the Dolphins. He struggled with both injuries and performance. Mitchell was expected to thrive in 2015 playing next to stud defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh for the first time in his career. Instead, the two didn’t play well off one another and Miami finished ranked 28th in run defense, which is one of the biggest surprises of the season. Nagging calf and back injuries forced Mitchell to miss four games, and rookie second-round pick Jordan Phillips did a decent job filling in. Phillips has a higher ceiling and may be ready for a bigger role in 2016. That could make Mitchell, and his $3 million salary, expendable this offseason.

A guy we should have never signed in the first place, not worth his salary plays like a minimum guy

Eh. Cut and replace with someone else cheaper. He just has not played well at all for us

I liked the signing but, he was bad last year. I'm in a wait and see mode with the new coaches. He is cheap, don't think Phillips is ready, and like soo many others have to look at injury and coaching. It's almost like we cannot really assess anyone, and have to leave it up to Gase & Company.

Ive been so high on mitchell but last year was horrible for him. Im so on the fence with this player because 3 mil is not a horrible price for a vet DT, but I also want to draft another Dlineman.

I think the questions are can you do better with that $3 million at the position and how much do you value that roster spot? We have enough holes and depth to be filled on this roster. The coaching staff will grade each position out and prioritize how urgent the need is for an upgrade compared to other positions on the team.

Should have been cut last year going by game tape. He's just not big enough to hold up at the point of attack.

Cut him If Phillips is not ready by now he never will be.

If he's not a solid starter (at a position that takes time to develop) after his rookie season, in which he played sparingly, he never will be???

What dude??? Is this real life

 What are you talking about? Remember Paul Soliai? His first three/four years in the NFL were unproductive. Wasn't until later that he became a solid player.

You can argue he was one of the 3 most disappointing players on the team last year (Jamar Taylor and Greg Jennings also come to mind). He was just really bad at times.

Honestly, I would cut him loose . . . . not because I expect Jordan Phillips to just take a major step (love his potential but DT takes time to develop) . . . I just think from what Earl Mitchell gave us over the last year and a half . . . you can get that from anybody and I'd much rather invest the time into a higher ceiling, cheaper young guy than an aging vet who has underperformed.

I was somewhat intriuged with him being an option at NT in a 3-4 switch (if that happened) . . . but after hearing that he didn't care for playing NT in Houston, highly doubt he'd be motivated to do it here . . . so yea I am cutting bait and recouping the salary on him.
