"I believe the Steelers’ preference was for Timmons to be re-signed, but that preference had a price attached to it because they viewed him as a player with declining skills, especially against the pass," Labriola said. "Timmons continued to be among the team leaders in tackles in just about every game, but the defense is designed for the inside linebackers to make a lot of tackles, especially vs. the run."

Where things had deteriorated with Timmons was in his ability in coverage, both zone and man-to-man. At one time, Timmons was a special player in his ability to cover backs out of the backfield, tight ends, even the occasional wide receiver if an opponent’s formation isolated him in that situation.

"But over the last couple of years, that was no longer the case, and Timmons wasn’t getting any younger or faster. Then when the Dolphins offered a contract that guaranteed Timmons $11 million over the next two years, that had to have been a deal-breaker for the Steelers because he just isn’t that kind of player anymore. Maybe in Miami, but not here."

-EDIT-

Look at these 2018 cap hits people....ugh!

Maxwell: $10M
Branch: $10M
Alonso: $9.65M
Timmons: $8.2M

only one of these deals has an easy out after this season...fyi.

And why do you keep mentioning cap hits in 2018? Are we skipping the 2017 season entirely? Whatever fits the rhetoric, I guess...

Imagine how worse your post would have been if we would have spent the $40-50 million on contracts for B. Williams and D. Poe like you wanted to.

You're assuming the OP agrees with the contracts handed out to the players mentioned. I'll give you a hint -he doesn't. Therefore the aforementioned players wouldn't be in addition to these cap hits.

LaBatard's reasoning Timmons won't be good is joey Porter wasn't any good after he left. He had a 17.5 sack season for the fins.

I'll give you a hint -you missed the sarcasm.

I don't think there's any doubt Timmons is declining....

but it's the rioute Miami's chosen so................

Do people forget the cap is projected to steadily increase approx $10m per year over the next few years?

Still better than what we had before.... am i right?

yes but what exactly are you referring to exactly? the 2 deep depth that played and stunk up the joint? absolutely...or spencer paysinger as a starting nickel? absofreakinglutely...or a one leg all season long jelani Jenkins? yep
