George Steinbrenner began spring training in classic Boss style, saying he was disappointed some of his New York Yankees stars will be leaving camp for the first World Baseball Classic.

Steinbrenner was surrounded by reporters when he finished his lunch at Legends Field on Thursday, the team's reporting date for pitchers and catchers. He gave brief responses to questions, talking about the Yankees and the WBC, which runs from March 3-20. Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and Johnny Damon are on the U.S. roster, and Bernie Williams is on Puerto Rico's preliminary roster.

When baseball owners approved the World Cup in August 2004 at the urging of baseball commissioner Bud Selig, the Yankees abstained.

Boo freakin hoo. Sorry georgie, money cant buy you everthing.

LOL, yeah it can. No Yankee pitchers are playing. Matsui isn't playing and they are about to put the squash on Posada playing!

With A-Rod and Jeter the negative press would be too much if they didn't go so he has to let them go because of their huge name status

I actually think Matsui not playing is an even better deal than if Jeter or Arod didn't play. Matsui IS Japanese baseball. Him not playing for them must piss a lot of people off in Japan, if they even care about the WBC.

I don't know why people are getting on George hear. I agree with him. If I owned a baseball team I wouldn't want any of my players playing for this thing. It's meaningless. What if Jeter or Arod gets hurt? It would be a huge loss for the Yankees. Or what if Billy Wagner or Pedro blows out his arm in the WBC, the Mets are screwed.

Or maybe it's not about the money. Maybe it's the simple fact that the Yankee pitching sucks or is too old and fragile.

I'm sure the U.S. was falling all over itself to get Carl Pavano and Jared Wright on board.

LOL, this coming from a fan who's team just admitted this past week they might have made a mistake by getting Beckett and not giving him a full physical first! OK, old and fragile! Schilling, Wells, and Beckett! Don't be throwing stones from that glass house!

You don't think team USA could use Randy Johnson? That Mariano Rivera couldn't make a team? :sidelol: OK, whatever!

I'm not the one spouting off that John Henry's money is the only reason that Schilling, Wells and Beckett aren't there.

USA could use Johnson as much as they could use Schilling, but neither would ever happen.

As far as Rivera, does Panama even have a team? What the hell are you talking about? You are a WBC expert, why don't you brush up on the teams actually in the tournament.

Has Mike Piazza spent a day in Italy in his life? Yet he is playing for them and not the USA!!! I am sure they could have found a spot for Rivera on some team where Panama could have been included.

Panama does have a team in the WBC. Rivera choose not to pitch for them, although I'm sure George would have put a stop to it if Rivera did decide to pitch.

Isn't that what Ozzie Guillen was mad about? A-Rod not actually being from the Dominican and Nomar not being from Mexico and you started a thread stating he needed to shutup.

Nothing makes me happier than seeing the Yankees lose. I just wonder what their thinking is signing some of the guys like Farnsworth and Wright, Leo Mazzone works magic with pitchers and signing guys who have had success with him and hoping they have the same success is very risky, IMO.
