If you've watched enough football over the years, you often see teams take a step back before they take a leap forward. I wonder if that will happen this year with Miami, especially if Nick Saban decides to develop a young quarterback. I'm all for bringing in a young guy like Brodie Croyle, Omar Jacobs or Charlie Whitehurst. But, when I read that Matt Schaub and other young quarterbacks with NFL experience might be available it makes me wonder if that's the better move. I believe Schaub would solve the quarterback problem we've had since Dan Marino retired. If Miami can get a high pick for Ricky Williams, the team can then go after it's other two biggest problem areas -- the secondary, which needs a major overhaul and the offensive line, where the Dolphins could use an upgrade at LT and RG. A move for a guy like Schaub could allow Miami not only to contend this year, but if other decisions pan out, perhaps be a strong playoff challenger. Considering the age of some stars like Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor, I think this would make sense.

we took a step back last yr in the 04 season.... and were making our way up now

In all honesy, taking a step back in team quality would be difficult even if we started a rookie at QB. He's not likely to be too much worse than the 28th ranked QB in the league.

That said... it is entirely possible that we are a better team, but with the same or even slightly worse record. I doubt it, but it is possible. We snuck up on teams to end the year... that won't happen next year... on the other hand, i don't see us losing so many in a row, either.

If we start a rookie QB... We will definatly take a step back. Probably would be around 6-10. If we bring in a Schaub/Rivers we could go maybe 8-8... With a vet we could probably go up to 10-6...

1. You think a rookie is THREE games worse than the 28th ranked QB? I can see worse, but not that much worse. People are forgetting how bad Ferotte actually was.

2. Schaub does not equal Rivers. Rivers would be a huge improvment.

I don't think we'd go after either Schaub or Rivers, since the knock on them is arm strength and Saban likes a vertical game. IMO, I do think we can have a successful season if we have a rookie QB. But that's predicated on a big improvement by our defense. We wouldn't go to the Super Bowl, though, but we could make the playoffs.

I would probably agree with that except if the rookie QB seriously fit our system. In which case with our running game and a more consistent effort from our receivers, we could be back at 9-7.

Its not the numbers... its how our offense would function. A rookie QB really holds back your offense. You can only install parts of your playbook. Also, defenses play you alot differently when you have a rookie starting. They dont show any respect for the pass and blitz the hell out of ya... It completely kills your entire offense...

Very well put and right on target.

I'm all for us drafting a QB but the pick is not going to affect our success next year.
We'll start Gus or another Vet QB without a doubt while the rook sits.

Hopefully we can draft a good prospect and land an upgrade to Gus.
In a perfect world......

We'll have to wait and see.

Fair enough. Good answer. i think it would depend somewhat on which rookie, but I definitely see your point.

You are putting way too much into that rating! our team won 9 games, that means somebody (probably more than one) with a Better rating than Gus played on a team with a worse record.

No to Rivers and Schaub. We need a Qb with a cannon.

No, we don't. We need a QB who can throw a decent long ball... but we 100% do not need a "cannon".

Look at recent throwing contests... sure, a few QBs can't throw it 55 yards, and a few can throw it 70.

But most can throw it plenty far.

It's ACCURACY that matters, short or long.

I totally agree we don't want someone who CAN'T throw it long, but it should absolutely not be the first quality we look for.

And Rivers can throw it plenty far. How often do you need to throw it 70 yards in the air? Never.
