Stephen Ross Should Put His Checkbook Away This Off-season

Wasn’t his checkbook away last season also? I hope they don’t make any big FA splash signings.

It makes sense sure....but what signal are you sending to your coaching staff and front office? "No spending in the off season in preparation for Harbaugh in 2020 guys" He needs to find a better way of bringing in talent without breaking the bank every year through FA.

I like the thought of Ross playing hardball and making all involved sleep in the bed they made. But injuries aside, the same non-talent related problems keep cropping up ( terrible road record, play calling issues, blown defensive assignments, etc...) so I think forcing them to atone for their sins or else, is futile. Even with a relatively healthy roster next year, the Gase “culture” of mediocrity will torpedo the season faster than injuries and poor talent acquisition. I’m also skeptical that a new d-coordinator will make a big difference unless fundamentals, accountability, and ability to teach athletes, becomes Gase’s marching orders to his staff. Gase would rather call plays than teach players how to properly execute the play.

Makes some great points, I'd love to see something like that (except for not letting them cut players... let them cut away). Or like Bob Dole mentions above, he could fire Tannebaum and bring in someone sensible. But you can't look for something unless you know what it looks like, and Ross has already shown he doesn't value sensible GMs.

Basically two things need to happen, and Miami, will be as good as anyone here can hope for...

1. Get a new, but much better, more experienced D-Coordinator. Some here will be adamant, that Miami has no talent on defense, but truth be known, there is good to a few possibly great players, but if your DC is not going to put the defense in positions to succeed, it will not work. The Defense becomes more consistent, a great deal of Miami's problems, are automatically fixed.

2. The O-line needs to once and for all get fixed. Those that have had an open mind, and have been paying attention, have seen when Miami's O-line is solid (not great, just at the very least solid), Miami with Tannehill with the starters is able to move the ball. Obviously the better the line plays, the easier the offense moves the ball.

Also, injuries are part of the game, and if those two things are fixed, injuries should not hurt Maimi to much if at all, but season over Injuries, and mass injuries at once need to also stop already...Miami has to be top 5 in terms of losing players for the season in the past 10 years...get a better trainer, fix the field to not be so dangerous. But figure It out.

they can’t release Robert Quinn or Andre Branch or Ryan Tannehill, or DeVante Parker or anyone else to save cap space. I would tell them they should have given out better contracts. All of those contracts are dead after 2019 so let this regime live through the highly overpaid players and not allow them to add more bad contracts to a roster that could be blown up a year later.

Why?

Releasing Quinn saves 12.9 million dollars and has zero dead money.
Releasing Branch saves 7 mil, and has 2 mil in dead cap.
Releasing Parker saves 9.4mil and has zero dead money.

Can save almost 30 million and only take 2mil dead cap...
2 of the three deals they didn't give out technically.
Quinn was a trade, and Parkers hit is due to his rookie contract, which has zero strings attached as long as he is healthy by March 1st.

I say cut them and roll that money over to 2020. No bandaid desperate FA signings but save some cap for when you got to extend the few good players coming up for extensions.

"...owner Steve Ross wrote quarterback Ryan Tannehill a check for $16.7 million on Wednesday (March 14th, 2018), converting most of his 2018 salary into a signing bonus to create $11 million in cap space for the franchise."

We need a starting CB, DT, DE, LG, RG, TE and possibly a QB & C. We also need depth at LB, CB, DT, DE, OG, OT, QB.

We have 7 draft picks. I think we need to draft DT, DE & CB in the first 3 rounds. Address the guard spot in FA and maybe TE.

Plus the Reshad restructure that put a fat check in his hands after giving him a fat check the year before.
