David Stern understands having a gun to protect your home. He’s not convinced carrying one on the streets makes you any safer.

For that reason, the NBA commissioner said Wednesday that he would prefer his players leave their firearms behind when they go out.

“It’s a pretty, I think, widely accepted statistic that if you carry a gun, your chances of being shot by one increase dramatically,†Stern said during his preseason conference call. “We think this is an alarming subject, that although you’ll read players saying how they feel safer with guns, in fact those guns actually make them less safe. And it’s a real issue.â€Â

It’s one that was raised recently when Indiana’s Stephen Jackson shot a gun in the air at least five times outside an Indianapolis strip club on Oct. 6. He originally told police he fired in self-defense during a fight in which he was hit by a car.

The NBA’s collective bargaining agreement allows players to own licensed guns, but they can’t carry them on any league or team business. Asked what kind of firearm rule he would want if collective bargaining weren’t involved, Stern said: “I would favor being able to have a firearm to protect your home. Period.â€Â

He added that walking the streets carrying guns was “dangerous for our players,†but said there has been no further discussion with the union about strengthening the policy.

Union spokesman Dan Wasserman said it already was bolstered in last year’s agreement, at the request of the league.

That's fine and I'm right there with you on that but a lot of people aren't. You think older people white or black are going to want to buy their kids so and so's shoes and jersey's if they get in trouble with the law or carry guns? You and I are young, we don't have kids (I'm assuming you don't), we like rap music (and I'm assuming u listen to some), and we grew up around the hip hop culture so we're tolerant to it. A lot of adults in there 30's and up aren't privy to the hip hop culture except for what they read in magazines so their scared by it. I love the NBA for the game and I like you could care less what anyone does in their spare time. The problem is that older folks don't feel the same way whether their right or wrong and David Stern has to cater to these sets of fans because the hip hop culture are guranteed fans, they'll be there no matter what (at least for now they are, I'm sure times will change again). So and so in there 30's and above, working a 9-5 are the people David Stern has to cater to because he's losing those fans. He's gaining fans with the hip hop community so why cater to them when their coming whether homey gets caught with a gun or beats his wife?!

I understand that, but every sport is flawed. NBA has want to be thugs running around the street, but MLB has about 75+% of their players cheating taking illegal substances or what not.

You may say its comparing apples to oranges, but i just feel saying NBA is crap because of what people do in their spare times isn't right.

I agree I don't think it's crap either but we only speak for ourselves, not everybody so you have to respect those who don't want to bring their kids to a game because of what these guys do in their spare time!

Actually, the NBA isnt even that great right now. Have you noticed how the rest of the world has caught and passed us? It's nowhere near a team game, fundamentals have been thrown out for individual achievemnet and monster dunks.

I enjoy basketball, but mostly only watch NCAA and high school....although you can see how the change in the NBA game has filtered down there now.....

I wasn't saying the NBA was at it's peak but I don't think it's crap, that was what I was trying to get at. I still enjoy the sport and watch it. It might not be peaking like I said but it's not crap. Plus with the young guys in this league coming into their own in the next couple of years, the NBA has a nice future IMO!
