Taking a look at some of this years draft picks:-

  • Jawaun James is projected to start ar RT
  • Jarvis Landry has caught all the attention in camp and is competing for both slot WR and punt returns
  • Walt Aitkens has impressed transitioning to safety
  • Jordan Tripp is rumoured to now be competing for starting LB spot
  • Terrence Fede has raised eyebrows during camp and was overly impressive against the Falcons

I know its very early but every year it feels like we have draft picks who under perform, cant fit system, struggle with injuries etc

I wasn't overly thrilled with Hickey and I know im going to get the 'haters' who are going to throw out, 'too early to tell' etc, but I can remember so many positives coming out so early from one draft class.

Very excited about Tripp and Landry.

Just think of how good this draft could have been if we had just signed a couple of more low priced vets to play the OL and drafted playmakers with those picks, instead of burning them on OL.

James looks really good at RT. Turner probably starts over Thomas, he just has better tools and once he learns the concept of leverage he will start. I really like Fede and Tripp. Landry is so good you don't have to mention him its expected at this point. Aikens looks bad to me at this stage but its a new position for him

Very early, but I will say I am encourage by the early returns.

But we got to temper the excitement as I recall after the 2008 season most of us were through the moon excited over the Long/Henne draft class, but that bubble popped within a season or two. If you go back and read threads from after that season, many were calling it the best draft class the dolphins had in a decade

I just don't understand this philosophy. In order for you to have success on offense, you need to have a good offensive line. If you sign a couple of low priced vets to play OL, you are shuffling through your OLine in two years. If you draft a couple of young guys that pan out, you don't have to worry about your line for a few years. Offensive linemen end up having knee issues and if you sign a vet, he may not work out for you. Don't get me wrong, I would love to be able to draft playmakers in the first round every year, but those guys will bust out if there are no guys protecting the QB.

Sorry, posted the above reply in the wrong thread earlier (the old one). Thanks for locking. :)

What low-priced starting vets that play a ZBS did you have in mind?

miamis just not used to be it but rookies being in your 2 deep from the get go should be expected if the gms any good...

I dont agree. look at recent superbowl contenders they invest high picks in OL

and don't forget their udfa classmate Chris McCain! Also the verdict's still out on drafted Lynch, and encouraging UdFAs Gator Hoskins and RB Damien Williams

Not unless it leads to championships. I still go back to the late '60s classes through '70 as our best. I realize many younger fans look at those drafts and names like Tim Foley and Bob Heinnz don't jump out. But those guys were fundamental parts of the glory era. Then unfortunately we really failed at the draft parallel to the great Super Bowl teams, preventing an extension of that era.

Regardless, I'm thrilled we prioritized the trenches in this draft. Too many Dolphin fans seemed to prefer a quota approach, wanting to draft dinky receivers and defensive backs. We were pathetic on the line of scrimmage and that's a natural regulator. The frills picks can come later, once the foundation is set.

I didn't offer too many personnel opinions prior to the draft but in the Draft forum I did boost Henne many times, saying I liked him and Ainge but preferably Henne. I wanted no part of Ryan at #1 and didn't like Flacco. Henne jumped out as a cool customer and tough guy with a great arsenal of downfield throws.

The guy I really liked but got away was Quentin Groves. IMO, we're kidding ourselves with some of these something-for-nothing types at OLB, plus moving Roth. Groves is an absolute wrecking ball with suddenness. But the way the draft fell, we would have needed to pluck Groves instead of Merling. The proper priority was the bigger guy.

:lol2: My, how times have changed, he sings a totally different tune these days.
