And then there was Stills, who was considered a steal last offseason when the Dolphins obtained him from New Orleans for a third-round draft pick.Stills was supposed to replace Mike Wallace as the team’s speedy deep threat who could stretch the field.
Instead, he was often underutilized by the Dolphins. His biggest headline came when he accidentally broke backup quarterback Matt Moore’s nose in practice.
Expect his production to go up this season. And it could be a significant hike.First-year coach Adam Gase, speaking Tuesday at the NFL league meetings’ AFC coaches breakfast, said Stills “definitely will be” more involved this season.
“We were involved in trying to acquire him when we were in Chicago,” Gase said. “Being around these guys from New Orleans that came up there and we tried to make a play for him before he got traded to Miami.
“I’ve always liked his skill set, I liked him coming out. I’m excited to see what we can do to get him rolling in this offense. That’s why I feel really good about the group that we have, the skills guys. If we could stay healthy I feel really good about that group.”
Former Dolphins receiver O.J. McDuffie said he was surprised how much Stills was limited in the offense last year. And it wasn’t just Stills’ lack of targets that made him curious.
Landry led the team with a whopping 166 targets. Cameron was next with 70.
“We all were curious why a lot of guys weren’t more involved last year,” McDuffie said. “Looking at targets alone, the amount of targets Jarvis got to the next man was Jordan Cameron. And it was amazing how kind of stuck in a rut we were in terms of distributing the football.
“I thought Kenny Stills was going to be a pleasant surprise for this football team, his ability to get deep with what he did in New Orleans — I thought it was something special.”

McDuffie is as interested to as anyone to know what Gase will do with the offense, but he knows the “game is not as vertical as it used to be.”
“I think they’re going to try to hand the ball of a lot sooner — get Jarvis the ball right behind the line of scrimmage, make him make guys miss like he does as a punt returner. Kenny might be a guy who gets more intermediate routes. DeVante is a guy you can give it to to get a quick 5-10 yards.
“They’ll take shots with certain guys, and they can take shots with all three guys. Jarvis surprised me with his ability to get deep at times.”
It’s a contract year for Stills — his rookie deal expires next March. It’s too soon to tell whether the Dolphins will try to re-sign him but he could earn himself a nice paycheck whether it’s in Miami or elsewhere.

If he's going to have a big role, the organization needs to be proactive in giving him an extension.

He'll play good and leave probably the Tannenbaum graduation way and we'll get a lovely 5th round comp pick.

If he let's Landry leave I am done with this franchise

I'm expecting a Emmanuel sanders in denver type role with stills...

With a concrete top 3 starters at WR this year no reason he shouldn't have a bigger role really.

This.....is way bigger than it is being portrayed. This is very, very good news.

I wouldn't be surprise if Stills flourishes under Gase - or at least has a season like Rishard had last year - and earns himself another contract next year with another team :rolleyes2:

I think that if he plays the way they want him to and shows results, then they'll extend him way before the season ends. If he's not catching the ball or separating the way they want him to, then they won't. I just don't think they're gonna let him hit FA if they like him.

He's necessary as a threat to take the top off the defense, and I hope he catches a lot of teams sleeping. But the best guy on offense is Landry and he should continue to be Tannehill's go to guy. If Parker emerges as well, there's just no reason to draw more plays to Stills. He showed nothing last year that showed he deserved more. In fact, he looked like he was running half speed a lot of the time. Not a maximum effort type guy.

Stills fails miserably as a threat to take the top off.

He plays so much slower and smaller when pads go on. Very little EXPLOSION.

I'm not a fan. And I value speed. But Stills only has timed speed. Very weak WR.

Running the offense through Stills makes as much sense as running it through Hartline.

Stills was open so much last season and we would just check down to Landry or Miller.

Oh great, more throws behind the line of scrimmage with an o-line that can't block defenders. Miami's offense sucked under Philbin and Lazor BECAUSE they emphasized the short pass; when that's mostly all you do, then it's easier for the defense to cut down on yards after the catch (which is the entire focus of Philbin's offense). If Gase continues this dink-and-dunk type of offense they're in big trouble considering that they have not made any significant upgrades to the worst o-line in the league.
