Stoops takes blame for OU's woes

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops admits he didn't see it coming. After back-to-back runs to the BCS title game, the Sooners have as many losses in their past five games as they did in the previous two seasons combined.

At a school that didn't have a losing record at any point in Stoops' first six seasons, it was difficult to see hard times on the horizon. But after a 45-12 loss to Texas on Saturday, the Sooners find themselves with a 2-3 record and without control of the Big 12 South race for the first time since Oklahoma State knocked them out of the conference championship game with a 16-13 win to end the 2001 regular season.

The only thing that I can see that Stoops has done wrong is that last year when Oklahoma blew out Houston, Oregon, Kansas, Nebraska, Baylor, & Colorado he wasn't grooming either Tommy Grady (now at Utah) or Rhett Bomar to succeed Jason White. Granted he would have had to make the tough decision of who the heir would be but those 6 games would have netted them probably around 140 snaps & 60 passes. That's a lot of experience vs 6 different types of teams & atmospheres.

Spot on. Stoops' only glaring mistake has been short-sightedness. Rather than groom the future of the team, he chose to run the weaker teams on his schedule. In the world of the BCS today, he almost had to take this approach. MOV, although not technically still included in the BCS formula, has always played a major role in the human voting.

Its a shame too that OU is doing so poorly especially after such great hopes for Adrian Peterson. Its hard to run the ball when your teams down by 2-3 touchdowns in the 4th
