i hera everyone complaining about him not using the last timeout. there a couple of reasons why you do not do this...
1. keep the defense on their heels. We drove all the way down the field, their defense was reeling, calling a timeout also gives them an opprotunity to get set.
2. theres only one reason really.
Dumb calls, Dumb plays, poor execution. ALL THREE have been the cause of ALL of the losses. Now, my question to YOU is, "Is Saban responsible for 1) the design of a play, 2) the plays called during a game, or 3) the execution during the play by the players?
You see, the way I look at it, the head coach IS directly responsible for all three facets of the football team. Saban should take all of the "goofy" gadget playes and put them on the shelf until the team can execute the basics correctly. Saban should make sure the players are correctly prepared to execute on the plays correctly. And then Saban has to call the correct plays at the correct time during the game.
The gadget goofiness is self evident. We have seen these plays and all scratched our heads asking, "what the hell are they thinking?". But other bad plays include having Zach blitz when he can not get past a lineman.
The execution is a bit tougher. There is only so much you can do with a player, but Saban has REPEATEDLY said that if a player can't or won't execute, he will replace him with someone who will. Well, for better or worse, he should make good on his threats. But first, and foremost, teach the guys the right way to do things. If a DB can't catch, have CP drill him with passes during practice until he learns to catch or has a big bruise between the numbers. If Ronnie doesn't know how to submarine for a yard, or the line doesn't know how to block it, take some of those big DTs on our roster and make 'em run it until they can get that yard EVERY time. You have to have a play that will work 98% of the time to pick up a yard when you need it. At the end of the day, I can see how frustrating for Saban it must be to watch his receivers dropping TD passes, but it is up to him to make sure they can execute or get someone who can.
Now the play calling is the easiest to pick apart. There is no question that bad calls have resulted in missed opportunities.
Examples:
- Just this past Jets game, how do you NOT go for it on 4th down at the opponent's 3yd line (or was it the two)? The point is, you have your best opportunity to score a TD, which you need. And you have the rare opportunity to get a first down at the 1 if you can't punch it in the endzone. You finally have some momentum that you can not afford to lose, and your downside is that you don't get 3 pts and you leave the opponent taking over in their own endzone, with your D playing well. BAD CALL to take the field goal. BAD assessment of the old risk/reward analysis.
- 1st and goal, the Jets D is lined up to stop the run straight up the gut. You have only a DB on the outside to the wide side ot the field. You have Ronnie Brown, who is supposed to be fast enough to get to the outside, and have him go one on one against a DB that he SHOULD be able to run over. Pitch it out and let him run for the pylon. Unless he is not really as fast as advertised. Bad call.
-3rd at 2 at the end of the game. 1 timeout left, run the ball up the middle and hope for a few yards. If you get the first, great, spike tha ball at take a couple of shots at the sidelines or run the ball once more and use the time out to set up the FG a few yards closer. If you DON'T get the first, use the TO to get the FG unit on the field. But either way, run the ball on 3rd and 2 when you are at the edge of FG range and know you are going to kick on 4th down anyway. Dumb call.
The bottome line: Saban IS responsible for it ALL. And he needs to get it together instead of making excuses.
IMO
