First of all, let me say that I'm one of those people who hates this stupid notion of "coach worship" (as Dan LeBetard calls it) that so many people have. It's ridiculous to think that coaches make as big a difference as people think they do. Saban didn't have two easy catches bounce off of him for picks. Saban hasn't missed 3 or 4 kicks in crunch time this season. But for those of you who lay so much importance into coaching, here's something to chew on.
Here's the record for a certain coach during his first coaching stint with CLE:
1991: 6-10
1992: 7-9
1993: 7-9
1994: 11-5
1995: 5-11
As you've probably guessed, yeah, that coach is Bill Belichick. Mr. Super Genious himself was basically given 5 years to right the ship in CLE, just like Saban has in Miami, and he totally sucked it up. But how? If he's Mr. Super Genious, how did they suck so bad?
The answer is simple: He didn't have Tom Brady. A guy that Bill Belichick wasn't even smart enough to start in front of Drew Beldsoe after going 5-11 his first year in NE. A guy that just happened to land in Belichick's lap after Drew went down in that fateful game against the Jets I believe. So who's the genious? The answer is not Belichick. The answer is Tom Brady. Get it now coach worshippers?
And for those of you who still don't get it, what about the Steelers? Go about 3 or 4 years back when they had a couple of losing seasons. Everybody wanted Cowher's head on a plate. And guess who landed in his lap? Yeah, Ben Roethlisberger. And don't tell me that's because Cowher can scout talent. This is the same guy who stuck with Kordell Stewart for like 3 years. He was lucky...just like Belichick...just like most coaches.
And these are just a few cases. So how is this relevant to Saban? Basically, 90% of teams live and die by their quarterback, not their coach. In the post-Marino era, we have yet to find that guy. And unless Saban does find that guy, he's gonna turn into Belichick in CLE. So stop calling for Saban's head, stop calling for Mularkey's, etc. and let's give him his 5 years to find his guy. Maybe it's a healthy Culpepper, maybe its Troy Smith or Brady Quinn...who knows. Just cross your fingers and hope that Saban finds somebody in the next 2 years, because that's what it comes down too.
The chances of winning the Super Bowl without a really good QB come few and far in between. This topic comes up everytime draft day rolls around: For God's sake Nick, be the first coach to actually address the QB position in the draft since Marino left!!!!!! PLEASE!!!! If you draft enough QBs, eventually you'll hit on one.
