This has been proven time and time again. Stopping the run is vital if you are going to have success in this league.

If you are a defense and you stop the run, you are going to have success. You saw this last year with Pittsburgh, New England, Philly, Atlanta. Every defense that was successfull all had one thing in common. That was they were able to stop teams from running on them. Even teams like Pitts, New England and Atlanta did not have that much talent in the secondary. In fact by the end of the season New England would be playing players that are no longer in the NFL. Yet they still had defensive success. Looking at New England against Indy in the playoffs they were able to take away the runnign game and the result was another Colts loss with only scoring 3 points. If you look at Philly they actually have a very good secondary with a couple of pro bowlers yet they were getting into shootouts until Jeremiah Trotter came in and their run defense picked up.

Once you take away the run you are able to get the other team into 3rd and long situations where they will be forced to pass. When this happens you can blitz to apply pressure on the QB and force a mistake. With all good QBs the only way to beat them is pressure. It doesnt matter for the most part how good your secondary is, if you don't get pressure you are not going stop them. You are also able to control how long your defense is on the field for if they are passing. There is less wear during the game AND throughout the season. Finally, another key point is that the other team does not have a consistent way to drive the ball. The pass much more skill, timing, conditions, etc. to be effective than the run does.

Now this is nothing new, but with all this talk about how weak our secondary is, it should still be noted that we stop the run. We stuffed the Broncos, we stopped Curtis MArtin and we stopped the Panthers. All three teams are very effective at running the ball.

Bottom line is even though we are thin in talent in the secondary (mostly CBs) stopping the run is still the most important part. Last year we saw passing jump but stopping the run was still the most important thing in a great defense.

Good post; though I think that it is one of four key aspects of winning a football game.

Stopping the run and running effectivly
Winning the turnover battle
Controll time of posession
ALWAYS leave with points in the redzone

If you can do those four things

good post, but nothing new there.

That is like saying "making good decisions is key to being a good QB".

isn't this all common knowledge? did someone say "stopping the run is optional: you could still win anyway"???

you realize you can edit your post, right?

stopping the run with consistency is a sure fire way to ensure success and a good record.

however, in one game, particularly in a playoff game, a talented team can abandon the run and beat you

so, unless the fins can get better play out of their secondary, this will untimately be their demise this season

I do know I can edit, however I do not believe in it. Everybody makes mistakes, why hide it? Besides, who am I fooling? Everyone knows I am a premature submitter:cry:

editing is another form of the man trying to hold you down. be cool dont edit. by the way, we stuffed carolinas run game like madden stuffs his turducken for thanksgiving

how can you not believe in it? its not an idea like a religion, its an actual thing - it really exists! :D

but jokes aside - its not about covering up mistakes or owning up - just making it easier to read your posts and prevent unnecessary posts of correction.

wow, whats with all the "editing morality" on here?

its like everything else here, pick a side and make a stance

I generally agree, but my definition of stopping the run would be different than most. Attempts, not yards. We hardly stopped Curtis Martin when he had 31 attempts, 20 in the first half while building a 10 point lead. To demonstrate how vital those 20 attempts and the 10 point lead were, look at it this way: the Jets were 6 point favorite. At halftime when they were ahead 10-0 the line was basically pick -em or the Jets slight favorite. That 10 point lead with slight favoritism in the second half meant the Jets were theoretically 5 chances in 6 to win. That's pure mathematics, not any guesswork. So we can crow all we want about the 2nd half numbers and the game net, supposedly shutting down Curtis Martin, but the damage had been done.

Also, the net rushing attempt differential between winners and losers in the playoffs is actually greater than in the regular season, so I can't see the argument that you can abandon the run in the playoffs. We ignorantly tried that in '94 at San Diego, running the ball a grand total of 8 times despite leading virtually the entire game. San Diego had 40 rushing attempts and eventually won the game as they deserved to.

Exactly, I still think Feeley should be our starter and that Eddie Moore will have a breakout year. I will not budge

And Boston will have 1200 yards receiving, Howard will have 10 INTs and 20 passes defensed.
