Strange Stats for Miller & The OL

it's also a function of our scheme.

we don't do a lot of jam it up the middle running. we hand it off a few yards back and let the oline dictate his path.

and run blocking =/= pass blocking

(obviously)

This statistic is going to have a significant amount to do with how quickly a running back hits a hole and makes a single cut decision. Both things we know Miller are very good at. I dont think this says much about the O Line because Miller has a very quick initial acceleration and is thus why the average is only 2.9 yards. He hits a hole very very quickly and the O Line doesnt need to hold the blocks as long as with other backs

Suggests his post-contact yards are a bit below his overall ranking, which would compute. I really want to see him up his work after contact - stiff arms, hurdling tacklers, jump cuts, bullrushing DBs.... his approach to being tackled is a bit vanilla right now and one way in which he could dramatically up his already decent numbers.

He was 2nd in the league in yards per carry. If you don't get 15 carries per game you are not going to lead the league in rushing. His 5.1 yards per carry shows he is very good in this system. He can improve but he is a very solid starter and is better in short yardage than people give him credit for.

Miami's line looked pretty good run blocking. Ask any offensive lineman and they'll tell you it's much easier to push guys out of the way (like in run blocking) than it is to deal with a pass rush.

Miller also does a good job of hitting the hole and not dancing in the backfield.

The O-line did quite well in the run game considering the loss of Albert. I think they are going to be quite good this year. Certainly more depth there this season and the addition of Mathis would be wow.

No doubt, as others are saying, Miller's burst and O scheme contribute mightily to this stat.

LeMarvelous is one of the punks better picks.

It's Bill Lazor.

We run the football when the opposing team has 6 men in the box and get creative to make space, as well. Our offense is built to run the ball when we have a mismatch there, and pass the ball when we don't.

im also trying to remember if he got touched on his 99 yard td? that could pad the stats a hair. but i like miller, i hope he isnt too expensive to keep in the offseason. will give us a little more time to see if ajayi is gonna hold up physically, wont force us into playing our hand with williams as our stud back or having to look into drafting a rb high next year. the second contract is the big ones now a days for RB because by the time its over they are gonna have alot of miles on those tires. if he has another good year just hope he takes market value with maybe a lil hometown discount instead of trying to get overpaid. i think drew is his agent so i dont see the market value or hometown discount. adding muscle in the offseason might slow him down a lil, but even if his YBC drop about 0.3 as long as his YAC raise 0.4 then its worth it

The OL play in recent years has changed a lot. The guys coming out of college are much more pass block ready than run block from most teams going spread O's. The NFL going pass happy has produced some of the same, along with the ZBS. The days of an OL just imposing their will to power block and move the D down the field are mostly history.

In general, all 5 guys on the OL have to pass block or, the QB is in some trouble. On the run, one or two can make good blocks and a RB has a lane and space to run, while the other 3-4 on the OL did nothing.

In watching our OL run block last year, I can tell ya that, other than Albert and sometimes Satele, no one was close to average, let alone good. Yet, the run game worked. Go figure.

The problem here is Miller has been horrible in 4th quarters when games really matter. Compare his first half numbers to his 4th qtr numbers. He racks up some empty stats in first halves as teams are napping or caught off guard with gameplans, but Miller is nowhere to be found when the game turns up a couple notches and escalates in energy.

People familiar with college football are familiar with the running lanes this system creates - see Oregon and Ohio State (specifically this season, as Meyer added some of Oregon's principles to the running game). Those not familiar can look at the Eagles. As long as you have a running back that doesn't dance too much (why the Eagles got rid of McCoy), you'll be successful on the ground. Miller is fine but unspectacular. Adding Ajayi to the mix should allow the team to run the ball more often.

It definitely does a little bit, but taking that one run out probably isn't gonna make a HUGE difference. But I hate that argument "well if he didnt have this long run blah blah" because every back has long carries, you can't just take one (or a few) out here and there and compare to the rest of the league without doing the same for every other rb
