Since Jimmy Johnson left, our team has not had the ammo to get talented players through the draft. We spent our draft picks while trading for players such as lamar gordon, AJ feeley, Joey Harrington, Daunte Culpepper, and Ricky Williams. By the start of this season, none of those players will be on this team. We will have lost 2 first rounders, 2 2nd rounders, 1 3rd rounder and multiple mid rounders that shows for nothing today. With the few first day picks we had, we made terrible mistakes. Do Jamar Fletcher and Eddie Moore ring a bell? Once again neither remain on this team. So for a period of 5 years we didn't gain ANY talent and only allowed our talented players to age. Jason Taylor and Zach Thomas still are playing at an amazing level but they both only have several years remaining. When looking at the future, we must now look past them.

Looking at our roster we have a solid core to build around for the next several years.

Offense: On offense we finally drafted our qb for the future. John Beck will be starting in the next couple years and hopefully solidify this position. Ronnie Brown is still only 25 and can play another 7-10 years for us as our star rb. At wr, Chris Chambers is getting a little older but still is on the better side of 30. Ted Ginn Jr. and Hagan are both 22 and make our receiving corps talented and young. Martin is a decent te with a lot of upside but is injury prone. I believe we need to draft a very talented te in the next couple years. On the offensive line, Vernon Carey, Samson Satele, and Mormino represent 3 starters that have great careers ahead of them. Hopefully we can have some continuity and they will get used to playing together. Then all we need is some more talent on the right side of the line.

The only major "needs" to get younger are at TE, RG, and RT. Everywhere else we have young talent. The continuity and experience under Cam's system will hopefully produce an amazing offense in time.

Defense: Our defense looks very good on paper but looking down the road we have some serious problems. Matt Roth is finally starting and should be a very solid de for our defense. Channing Crowder is also a young talented olb who hasn't reached his full potential. Jason Allen is looking like a serious bust. I know its still very early but he failed at safety and early reports say he is getting burnt in mini camp. Yeremiah Bell is an underated safety who will really benefit when we add some talent to the secondary. Zach Thomas, Jason Taylor, Joey Porter, Vonnie Holliday, and Traylor are all old. Thomas and Taylor are still playing AMAZING but this thread is looking 5 years down the road at the future. Realistically, they won't be able to keep their recent play up for five more seasons. Two to three is more realistic. We will need to start adressing their future replacements in the next couple drafts. We also have some young talent at NT in Solalai (Spl?) and Evans.

Bottom line. We need to get younger on defense! This year we focused on offense and i fully expect us to invest early picks on defense next year. Our cornberbacks are ok. We need a shutdown cb, replacements for vonnie holliday/zach thomas/ jason taylor, and another safety.

If you say we have 7 first day picks in the next 2 drafts and adress- CB, TE, MLB, CB, OLB, and RT I think we will be in very good shape. Taylor and Thomas will still be playing training their young proteges and our offense will be in full swing with beck at the helm. Then you have the pats system. A mixture of talented veterans with young players and you keep accumulating draft picks to add young talent behind the vets. The vets train the rookies so then the vets can be let go once their time has passed.

I think we can afford to continue to retool our offense for one more year

Looks pretty good to me with only one small exception. You list RT as one of our needs for future drafts. I'm not very confident that Carey will be able to handle the LT spot. There are a number of good LT prospects in the 2008 draft class (Jake Long, Sam Baker) that could be available if we have another rough season. I would much rather draft a cornerstone LT and move Carey back to RT if we could do that. We could actually have an above average line should that happen.

I think you have the right idea, but you are counting a few eggs before they hatch. Beck, Ginn, Satele, Soliai, Mormino, Hagan, Evans, and Roth have really done either nothing yet or have had very minimal impact. I know, I know, they will all be pro-bowlers, and 10 year starters for us. I read the minicamp reviews, GM and coaches comments, and have high hopes for all of them myself. But they have not proved anything on the field in this league, and I have heard the same thing about dozens of draft picks over the last 20 years this time of year - "has a nice future", "going to be a good/special player for a long time in this league", "ready for a break-out year". Sometimes it's right, a lot of times, it's just BS.

I'd like to see them give us a full year as a quality starter and prove that they can really succeed at this level. Until they do that, I still see a lot of holes.

Maybe our young offensive players will all step up, and be the players that we hope. If so, our defense may need a bunch of youth next year, as you say: CB, LB, DL.

However, the opposite could still happen. Maybe Roth, Wright, Wright, Evans, Soliai, Allen all could make huge jumps and give us a lot of great young players, while the offense flops - we could have the same holes on offense next year.

Roth has sacked Brady. If he retired today, he is a success as a Dolphin in my eyes.

kelvin smith and abraham wright may be good replacements one day

I mostly agree. I do believe that we are 1 o-lineman & 1 db from being one heck of a football team. But, yes, we need to continue the infusion of youth on the defense.

I think you can add Hadnot in as a young o-lineman for us that I believe is going to excell at RG, really all we need (imo) on our offensive line is a replacement for RT which i'm hoping could be Alibi or Toledo but I guess we'll have to wait and see, seeing as the draft is so deep at LT next season getting a very good LT with maybe our 1st or 2nd next year and moving Carey back to RT I believe we would have a above average line with RT Carey, RG Hadnot, C Stetelle, LG Mormino, LT Pick. Then with Toledo, Alibi, and a few others as backups we would have a very young but talented offesive line with good depth for a long time to come

I agree about Jimmy Johnson. Alot of people give him crap, but I loved Jimmy. The man could draft.

I'm just glad we didn't spend another 2nd round pick trading for a QB this year. A conditional 4th for a veteran I can live with, a 2nd every freaking year for QBs who aren't really all that great I can't.

In my opinion, we already have Zach's replacement. Crowder will slide inside and become the heart of the defense. JT is a lot harder. Finding a guy as versatile as him will be nearly impossible.

I do not think we are in that much trouble as far as the front 7, because along with the Vets you talk about, we also have Fred Evens, Rod Wright, Steve Fifta, Matt Roth, Abraham Wright, Paul Soliai, Kelvin Smith.

Of that List, the only one that has not impressed yet has been been Kelvin Smith, so we will be ok.
