Sturgis Fighting For His Job

I'm giving up on Sturgis. Kid can't make chip shots and is injured a lot. Just screw it and bring in someone else. When you are biting your nails on a 30 yard field goal, your kicker really sucks

The real question is; is Potter this years' Sturgis?

Sturgis was 15-17 from inside 40 yards, so I wouldn't say he can't make chip shots.

I don't want to give up on him but he was hurt again today... he's not making it easy.

Remember the. situation: Everybody was yelling to get rid of Dan Carpenter... Miami had the second to last pick in the fifth round and didn't pick again until midway through the seventh round. There were only two kickers deemed draft worthy Dan Hopkins and Caleb Sturgis, Hopkins was drafted early in the sixth round, just a few picks after Miami drafted Sturgis. Had Miami tried to wait until the seventh round to select Sturgis they likely would have missed out on both kickers. And finally the best veteran free agent kicker last year was none other than Dan Carpenter, the player Dolphin fans didn't want.

Carpenter cost us a chance at the playoffs. Chocked vs the Jets and missed 2 FG including one in overtime. That was one of the most painful Dolphins games I have seen in person. Then next week he misses a FG against the Cards. We let them come back. However, Carpenter hits that FG we don't lose that game. We would have been 5-1 heading into the bye week instead of 3-3. Who knows how the season would have turned out. It would be safe to say it would have been a lot better than 7-9.

With that being said I didn't want him back.

Sturgis missed 4 kicks under 50 yards, one was a 46 yard attempt that hit the upright on a windy day in Foxboro and another was blocked. He had two really bad misses on the entire season, one a 34 yard attempt against the Bengals and the other from 41 yards against the Jets. Those two misses are not acceptable and need to be cleaned up.

I think Sturgis got hurt last year and hasn't fully recovered (mentally or physically). A big part of being a kicker is the mental game. He hit a rough patch along with the injury.

Miami has Sep 2nd to determine the kicker. Let Sturgis rest until a few days before and see where he is. If the pulled groin still exist PUP him or put him on IR and go with Potter. IMO Sturgis will be a steal for another team, we just need to figure out why he keeps having groin issues.
