Both in his introdutory press conference and on Finsiders, Campbell reiterated his philosophy regarding penalties which I found fascinating. He believes that committing a modicum of penalties of aggression is necessary for rather than detrimental to success. Obviously he is not referring to dumb pre-snap penalties which indicate a lack of focus. What he is saying is that preaching too much discipline causes players to play scared. Philbin's teams were typically the least penalized and Campbell is subtly saying that committing too few penalties (of aggression) correlates with softness. Campbell is subtly saying that being overly concerned with committing penalties suppresses a player's natural instinct, aggression and competitiveness.

Very insightful on his part to articulate such a mindset right from the start.

One of the best posts I've read on here this year. I nominate you for at least the post of the month! Fascinating.

Very interesting take, and the type of thought process this team needs from its head coach.

Yes, his explanation on penalties got me fired up. I agree with this 100%. I never cared about being the least penalized team, it never got us anywhere. I always felt that style of play promotes softness. I prefer an aggressive mentality, not worrying about creating penalties of aggression.

Officials are going to call penalties regardless of how aggressive you are and they are going to let a lot go as well. Better to get called playing aggressive vs getting called getting your ass wooped.

After watching the first 4 games of the season, one of the main things that stood out

is that the players were slow to react and looked like they were playing on their heals all the time.

It will be interesting to see how they respond. The post game locker room stuff is going to be much more REAL and spontaneous that much is certain.

I'm glad I will never have to hear Philbin say, 'I talked to the guys, and told them....'

I will be REALLY pissed if we see whiners after the first three practices next week.

He's doing a fantastic job of refining his idea of accountability: He expects the team to TRY HARD, and anything collateral that comes from that is okay because the effort was there. It's a great lesson not only for a football team, but for parents.

I hope we found a long term coach because it sounds like he is more dialed into the soul of this team than anyone.

So... how does the fact we committed about 15 penalties against JAX fit in this conception? I don't buy it. Penalties in the secondary, maybe. But roughness penalties and offensive holding (apart from the presnap penalties that are mentioned in the original post) are killers, not to mention kick/punt return penalties.

I have no problem with trying to reduce penalties. Shula truly hated penalties and Dolphins had the lowest number in the league thirteen times (most of any team in history). But as has been said, that doesn't mean you should lay back and do nothing as the Fins have been doing the past decade.

I like the analysis and think you're right in seeing his thoughts. However, if our plan is to become less disciplined/more aggressive and by such get penalized more, that'll be an issue as we are abysmal at getting chunk yards (or really anything consistently positive) to offset the penalties. Good teams don't care as much about those style of penalties because they also have the artillery to recover from them.

I do however agree that we need to be more aggressive. But for some of the players, an increased level of aggression will only make them so much better.

With that said, I don't plan on being a naysayer on Campbell. I want him to succeed and am excited to still have a shot at salvaging the season.

This guy. This situation reminds me of Mike Smith his final year.

'We're not soft!! YEAH!! WE'RE NO LONGER GOING TO KNOW AS SOFT!!!!'

'I can't order anybody to fight, but a few fights in practice wouldn't be the worst thing to toughen us up...'

More personal fouls after the whistle you *******!!!!

Maybe a couple of penalties for unnecessary roughness are just what we need to see. I'm sick of watching 11 pu****s run around on the field each week. Plaster some guys and make them sorry they came near you. Let Jonas Gray run some people over a few times and then throw the ball at them. Flag him...I don't give a s**t. I want to see some passion and fire out of everyone else other than just Landry.
