Ndamukong Suh, metaphorically speaking, has been the loudest player in training camp. But Suh, who has dominated everyone he’s faced, got relatively quiet when he was asked whether left guard Dallas Thomas and right guard Billy Turner are NFL starting-caliber players.

“It’s not my decision to make,” he said. “I’m sorry. I can’t answer that.”
But there they were again Tuesday, getting blown up, along with the rest of the line, in 1-on-1, 2-on-2, and 11-on-11 situations, largely against the blitz.

The offensive line woes weren’t all the fault of Thomas and Turner. Backup guards Jeff Linkenbach, Sam Brenner and Jamil Douglas didn’t fare much better. However, it was the entire offensive line getting blown up, not just the guards.

Suh, being more generous than necessary, said the offensive line is doing OK.
“I haven’t really sat back and identified anybody or (evaluated) anybody, saying they’re horrible,” Suh said. “Obviously we’ve got a great Pro Bowl center in (Mike) Pouncey. The guards are playing well. I think the tackles are doing their job as well.”

Suh, being diplomatic, complimented Turner and Thomas.

“Billy and Dallas, they’re young guys,” Suh said. “They understand what they need to get done. They’re athletic, they can move. They challenge me and I hope I challenge them every single day in practice.

“At the end of the day we want to push ourselves on both sides of the ball,” Suh said. “I want to dominate Dallas, I want to dominate Billy. At the end of the day that’s my job, that’s what I was brought here for, and that’s my goal.

“Hopefully I can get them better and they can make me better by pushing them as well, just like I expect Pouncey to do the same.”

What I can't understand is how can a team have a glaring weakness at the same position yr after yr after yr? Is it a FO issue or a coaching staff not able to coach or scheme these guys up.....I'm at a loss of words but if the guard play is our Achilles heel once again and if it is the reason this team doesn't make the playoffs I will be on board with blowing up the FO.....someone has to be held accountable....Hopefully they get this fixed before the season starts....Its like the only way this team seems to be able to fix an ongoing problem is over pay in FA....You can't win that way....we got 60 million guaranteed dollars in 1 Defensive Lineman, that's QB money.....last yr we paid a 6 million dollar WR 12 million.....I guess the bright side is the FO did fix the RT position with a draft pick, hopefully that strike gold with guard position this yr and Suh is just masking the progress because he needs to be double and triple teamed, no one can block this guy one on one and that's what these guys have to do in camp, no win situation for them.......

I think our preseason practice against Carolina may be the final litmus test. I am hoping that playing against a stout defensive line will get these guys ready. However, there has got to be some morale busting times out there for the guards. If they are mentally strong and overcome getting the crap beat out of them by Suh and company, then they might be able to learn and grow painfully.

If albert is healthy enough to play in the opener we will be fine with what we have.

I think part of the "problem" is Dr. Philbin wants scatbacks masquerading as Gs, pulling and looking all fancy pants
running down the field -- yet incapable of playing down and dirty POWER FOOTBALL bulldozer and/or stonewall protection!

So let's go back to the original WCO guru innovator -- Bill "call me Genius" Walsh. Some fatty biggie T (Tuna) jack in NY
exposed the key to dismantling that "prissy west coast" offense -- simply OVERPOWER their scatback OL with
MAULERS like Jim Burt and knock that fancy footed QB out of the game!

Crude but rude. Physical dominance still wins.

Enter Mr. Suh who feasts daily at the scatback salad bar eating fleet-footed G's with a side of arugula and Vidalia onion.
SOS. Physical dominance WINS on the LOS. Football ain't really changed all that much since '72.

Speaking of that. I miss the days of glorious OL play. Like poetry. Little, Langer, Kooch. And that G
(what was his name? Zonka?) playing FB.

Yea, prissy football has its limits.

BNF.

Do yourselves a favor and check out the finsiders podcast. They give out really good update in terms of practice and how individual players are progressing. To me, it's too early to tell whether your guards are good enough. After the first pre season game I think we'll have a good idea of whether we need Evan Mathis or not. I also think that's the front office's thought process also. I'm sure Mathis is working out, but also not eager to be in anyone's training camp. He could come in late and play well right away. Chemistry is overrated when it comes to offensive line play because it's still assignment oriented. We'll see how it turns out, I have a feeling guys will step up once they have someone outside of Suh across from them. If they don't, we go spend the money. Honestly, Suh would dominate 99.9% of all players you lined up in front of him.

I assume this is supposed to mean he will come back at a pro-bowl level? No set backs mentally or physically from his injury? Are you really willing to place your faith in that?

Quite frankly IMO the mentality from the FO should be the guys that are practicing NOW are good enough for the season opener. Which clearly they are not! It shouldn't be we're bad now and we're going to rely on a guy coming off injury to makes us good.

That has disaster written all over it! If this FO allows this season to be a waste because they're afraid of over paying for a guy that is better than what we currently have then they are stupid beyond belief.

I would have to disagree here, especially when it comes to the ZBS. In a ZBS the whole unit needs to work as one. On playside double teams the lineman need good chemistry to get the feel of their teammate on when he has his block maintained and when they can release and move in to the second level. The RB's need reps among the same lineman to get a feel for how they blocks they create as it's not a certain gap they are shooting for but the crease depending on whether the lineman was able to seal their defender to the inside or ride him outside to the sideline. I think chemistry is an extremely important part of our blocking scheme.

On the flipside, I completely agree that more should listen to the Finsiders podcast. Lazor's comments are refreshing. I think we'll be just fine on the o-line.

No chits? Suh is @the pinnacle of Mt. Dominance Inside and I'd be worried if he wasn't turning our Gs into girls 1 on 1 and even double teamed he's NOT negated just slowed down.

I'm tellen ya'll, eyes been watchin football since the glory days of Lombardi -- and Suh is the most dominant inside D player since Jerome Brown at HIS BEST -- and I think Suh is even more raw powerful!

If (???) we finally catch a freaky football break -- Suh's best days are ahead of him -- and that means HE'S A ONE MAN DIFFERENCE MAKER!

No doubt. He's the most singular impactful player on the roster.

Yea, Thill is a rising "star." But Suh is a one man gang.

That Eagles D with Reggie White, Jerome Brown, Seth Joyner, Clyde Simmons, Eric Allen, and I know I'm forgetting a few, was amazing. Probably underrated at this point. It didn't used to be.

Yea, hard to believe Riggie White and Jerome Brown were allowed on the same DL!

Peeps forget Jerome Brown set the standard at the U for kids like Sapp.
