DAVIE -- The NFL is preparing contingency plans in case Hurricane Jeanne forces the postponement of Sunday's game between the Dolphins and visiting Pittsburgh Steelers.
Steelers coach Bill Cowher told Pittsburgh media Thursday that moving kickoff to Monday or Tuesday is a possibility depending on Jeanne's location. Forecast tracks on Thursday afternoon indicated Jeanne could strike the South Florida area as early as Sunday morning.
The Steelers are honoring an NFL request by changing their travel plans and will now arrive in Fort Lauderdale late Friday night instead of early Saturday evening. However, the Steelers were told there was no chance the game would be rescheduled for Saturday night at Pro Player Stadium.
"There's a small chance possibly that we will play the game Monday or Tuesday," Cowher said. "I think it's a very slim chance of that happening, but that's what's presented to us."
Kickoff for the Steelers-Dolphins game is still scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday.
"Living in South Florida, we've seen firsthand how dangerous a hurricane can be and we take any threat seriously," Dolphins President Eddie Jones said in a team-released statement. "We have been in contact with the appropriate local authorities and the NFL. Public safety remains the most important element of our decision-making process as we monitor the storm." Earlier this month, the threat of Hurricane Ivan promoted the NFL to hold the Dolphins-Tennessee game one day earlier than originally scheduled. Hurricane Frances also affected the Dolphins, forcing the team to take a four-hour bus ride from Tampa following an exhibition game against New Orleans because its charter flight wasn't allowed to land in South Florida.
