Suns give:
Kurt Thomas
1st round picks in 2008 and 2010

Sonics give:
2008 2nd round pick
$8 Million trade exception

I hate these kind of trades. They just traded James Jones and Rudy Fernandez for a $3 mil trade exception..The Suns sure did lose a lot for some salary relief...

Can someone explain to me a trade exception anyways...

I dont follow basketball as well as I do football and baseball, but that trade looks stoopid on the Suns part. Kurt and 2 1sts for some cash? Maybe someone with better basketball IQ can fill me in on something I missed here....

suns are trying to clear cap room.

ive learned not to doubt what the suns are doing. Theyre one of the most consistantly smart organizations so while it looks dumb im sure there is a reason behind it.

Well, if you're dead set on avoiding the luxury tax, this is how you do it. That said, the Suns have given away an awful lot of first round picks in recent years, and many of those could have been quite useful.

I don't know remember those idiots overpaying for Steve Nash?

I'm hearing people saying this might be a precursor to the Suns going after Marcus Camby...

Also it appears as though this makes room on the roster for them to maybe sign PJ Brown...

as a sonics fan...i seen this trade and i couldnt stop laughing...i love it!

Yep, laugh away. I agree with the Camby sighting. Might be the big move they are making in the off-season. Trading away Thomas to make room for Camby sounds like a good idea to me. Although Thomas did a nice job this year, he is not even in the same league as Camby..really not even in the same league as a very old PJ Brown.

Also, draft picks in the NBA mean absolutely nothing IMO, unless you they are in the top 10 Which obviously these arent even close.

I think Steve Kerr has something up his sleeve:wink:

Well, Camby would be a great pickup for them, but getting rid of two first round picks so you can swap Kurt Thomas for PJ Brown doesn't strike me as a particularly smart move. They're basically the same player.

But Camby would be a PERFECT fit for the Suns. I can't quite see why Denver would be in a hurry to move him, but if Steve Kerr could add Camby at the 5, next to Stoudemire, man, that would be a great get for the Suns.

Presti and PJ are doing the right thing in trying to reshape the Sonics' image. Presti has come out and said they're not done making moves (expect one of, if not both, Watson and Ridnour gone as well as Johan Petro and/or Mohammad Sene).

Basically, Presti is doing what most new GMs walking into a mediocre position that does not look like they're contending anytime soon should do; start from scratch. Durant will be the face of the franchise, Jeff Green is wingman, Wally and KT will be veteran leadership, and Delonte West is the young guard of the future.

I don't like the Suns giving up 2 firsts just to get rid of KT, but this tells me they're looking at someone via FA (since the last time they made so many salary dumps they signed Nash and QRich)

Well, Brown will probably make about 2-3 mil if he signs. With the trade exception and the Thomas salary coming off the books, it will save 16 million...That would mean they are trading Thomas and the 2 picks for Brown and 12+ million...
I don't like losing the picks, but there is nothing to say they wont more than likely be number 26 or later. And there is a good chance they would have just ended up being sold on draft night anyways. Like AZ said, late picks often don't pan out. If there is someone sitting around at 28 or so whom they covet, the Suns would fairly easily be able to get back in the round...Plus we still have Atlanta's pick next year...

I'm trying to be positive, especially since I think this is part of a bigger plan. And for what we use them for, PJ Brown is basically the same player as KT, with a much smaller paycheck...

I have a gut feeling (haven't heard his name mentioned with the Suns yet) that we will be going after Matt Barnes.

This will give them the money to be able to afford Barnes, and Brown.

I would really like KG, but not at the expense of Amare. Then to only a slightly lesser extent, I would like Camby. I think he is a perfect fit for the system, the perfect player we are missing, and would have to give a lot less to get him...If it werent for his injury history, and for the fact that KG is as classy as they come on and off the court, I would probably actually prefer Marcus Camby...
