We could trade a draft pick for Williams and draft a replacement
We drafted a dynamite replacement with the #1 overall pick in Jake Long … then his body started breaking down and he wasn't even good by the end of his rookie contract because of the injuries. He was out of the league far too early. We drafted a replacement RT with Ju'Wuan James, when we wanted Zach Martin ... but James was never fully healthy, never fully good, and didn't last beyond his rookie contract.
We've drafted a LOT of replacements, including the highest drafted center of all time, Mike Pouncey … who also missed a ton of games, rehabbing while being paid amongst the elite OL players and watching us have disappointing OL's year after year. We brought in veteran replacements like Branden Albert, the top available free agent LT, who didn't even finish out his contract, Smiley, Kilgore, and Sitton who just got injured and had to immediately be replaced.
We draft the John Jerry's and Dallas Thomas' and think they're the next great guards … and they always vacillate between mediocre and putrid.
Let's face it, we've tried to replace OL tons of times, and almost always been unsuccessful. Thinking we can replace a LT--the hardest to find piece on the OL--is pure folly. There simply isn't evidence to suggest that we'll be able to do that in the next 5 or so years. It almost guarantees that our young QB plays with a poor blind-side protector if he's right handed.
Some teams may be able to replace losing a LT. I have zero faith that the Miami Dolphins can replace Laremy Tunsil.
As for Trent Williams … I don't see it working in Miami. He reminds me of an aging veteran ripe to start becoming injury prone, and if he comes to Miami, I'm expecting him to soon be out with a season-ending injury … call it feeling snakebitten if you like … but recent history has not be kind to us with adding veterans.
