Supplemental Draft Question/Gordon to the Browns

I was surprised that the only other player signed after supplemental draft was Larry Lumpkin (Colts) ... was the rest of the talent not even worth a UDFA contract?

Wow, well it's pretty tough to argue with a man who coached Garrard and then immediately coached Weeden the next year saying that... so... touche.

It's not that Todd Monken's evaluation tops everything, it's just one more data point that does specifically relate to Garrard and Weeden. Monken has also coached Luke McCown (college & pro), Matt Flynn (college), Jamarcus Russell (college), Charlie Batch (college) and Rick Mirer (college). He's really run the gambit of quarterbacks from the massively overrated but physically impressive (Jamarcus Russell, Rick Mirer) to quality career backups (Charlie Batch, Luke McCown), to a guy that the Seahawks hope is a quality starter (Matt Flynn), and then you have David Garrard who in sneaky fashion has put together the 22nd best career passer rating (among qualifiers) of all time. So his experience is pretty broad and deep as far as what level QBs he's coached, as he's also coached some guys that would never even sniff the NFL.

I thought it pretty significant that he singled out Weeden as the guy that was best of all. But that's not to say nobody should disagree with him. He could be wrong.

If I had to take a guess I would say that it's because nobody has gotten into training camp yet. As it stands there are still a number of veteran free agents that may actually be good that are out there unsigned, waiting for training camp to start. There are also a number of guys who were available in the real Draft who remain unsigned even on UDFA contracts. No team was really planning for more guys to be available via the Supplemental Draft, so they all took care of their rosters with what was available and now that they signed these guys, they're not going to cut them before they even strap on the pads and see what they're made of. Larry Lumpkin just happened to be the only other compelling athlete in this Supplemental Draft.

I rather have our pick next year than some player who had questionable off the field issues.
