I must admit. I was frustrated with Saban a couple weeks ago. But now, after letting the reality of our season sink in I am not upset, and in fact, I think he is the best person for the job. The job of turning the franchise around.

Think about this in terms of college. We have had two recruiting seasons under Saban, whereby the recruiting season is analogous to the draft. His first draft, unfortunately, he had only a few picks- which is essentially like losing scholarships. His last draft, we traded for C-pep (which I support) and we have added a young receiver who is playing fairly nicely for a third round pick (Hagan), a couple of future D-lineman (Fred Evans and Rod Wright) who should be solid rotational guys, and I think a future starter at safety (Jason Allen). So, from two recruiting seasons, we have several folks that are essentially red-shirting (J. Allen, F. Evans, R. Wright, and even K. Vickerson). In contrast, T. Daniels and C. Crowder are starters and D. Hagan is playing nicely.

If we look at it from the perspective of a college atmosphere, how can we rightly expect Saban to have incredible success within two years? Saban arrived here with a few picks, an aging defense, and some good defenders who have never made it over the hump. If Saban had arrived at a college with a similarly poor player foundation, that was scholarship limited, and where he has red-shirted half of his first two recruiting classes- Would we still expect the same level of success?

I think Saban is fine as our coach. I think we need better players, point blank. I won't begin to suggest where to start improving, but I think it is a bit unfair to rip on Saban so harshly right now.

At the end of the day, we have had many close games. I think we are several players away from being dominant, if we can hopefully achieve that status in the future. But, if we can compliment Jason Taylor with another pass rusher (which is perhaps what we need more than anything on defense) and add two starting caliber offensive lineman I think we could compete for the playoffs next year. And, if we allow Saban the two more years it will take him to have several of his recruited "seniors" starting, I think we will be fine.

I admire the hard work Saban puts in. Sure, he probably missed on Brees, but we all make mistakes and I think he will learn from everything. What do you think?

Agreed I blame alot of this on the media, they obviously have little to know understanding of how much change this guy is trying to do. Calling us a Superbowl contender, put way to much pressure on a team that is in transition.

To think that with 2 new QB's and essentially an entirely new secondary and a making more of a move to the 3-4 zone/blitz defense from a man 4-3 speed defense doesn't happen over night, it takes time, cohesion, trust.

This staff is doing the right things it hurts to have this happen 1-6, but we haven't sniffed the superbowl since 1992.

I agree it hurts. I was thinking that CK made a great comparison and contrast of Belichik in NE and Saban here. Belichik came to a team with a stocked cubbard and players he had coached before.

On that same note, Larry Coker came to the UM with a stocked cubbard thanks to Butch Davis. So did Les Miles to LSU thanks to Saban. I would think we could all agree that Larry Coker isn't half the college coach and recruiter that Butch is, yet he won a championship and Butch didn't. If we give Saban time, he will produce a winner- although just like every other coach, he will make some mistakes on the way.

i will counter with;

1- Saban has made a catastrophic series of hires. Lineahan was a prime HC candidate, and, he left. Mularakey, etc......Bad.

2- Two years in a row, we are out of it.

3- Personell decisions have been average at best.

We are a bad team, and, Saban has somthing to do with that.

Sorry....but Saban has shown me he's afraid to let the team play to win....how many fieldgoals that were on the G.B. side of the field....were possible to make 1st downs on....when your looking at 4th and 2, 4, 6...AND have a record of 1-5....what are you afraid of....forget the fieldgoals....try teaching your team to win....give them a chance to win....what do you have to lose....at 1-5?

that's what i've been trying to tell everyone on this board that is bashing saban,it won't happen overnight sorry.

What's the big deal? The Draft is much more fun when you're picking in the top 3. Everyone makes a big deal about that stupid game in early February, but it's that weekend in late April that REALLY matters. As always, our team has outmaneuvered the entire league and positioned itself perfectly. Sheer genius, I tell you.

.. and a ton that Bobby Grier had drafted and Pete Carroll had coached. Our turnover was huge in the first 2 years.

no excuses for saban. this is a poorly coached team

I support Nick Saban and I do think he is a great coach, but on the same token though, he must take ownership of what is his. This is his team, from the coaches down to the players...he must take ownership of everything that goes wrong as well as what goes right. He is the one who is ultimately responsible. Now, with this being said, there are two thoughts...

He knows what he's doing and the team is on track to be where he wants them to be according to his long term plan...

or

Last year's 6 game winning streak to close the season was a fluke...a freak of nature that should've never happened...the team was not that good, just that lucky and we fans assumed that Saban had miraculously turned the team around and that we were finally back and were going to kick *** this season.

You decide which.

i have been saying this to my buddies scince the houston debocle!!!

play to win, screw the fgs!!!!
now that we all know that the season is over, mabe we could relax and start playing like a team.
we have 2 huge game against the 2 best teams in the league comming up ( chicago and the colts )
wouldnt it be great to give each team its only lose!!!

here here! :drinkers:

I said the exact same thing last year. people just don't get what he had to cotend with...

1. How many starters from the Wanny draft Era?
2. Bad cap problems
3. Less draft picks
4. Finding 2 OC's in 2 years

He's got a LOT to change, it won't happen over night. Wish people would understand NO ONE could turn this team around in 1 year, or even 3. Saban NEEDS 5 years to see where he's at. We had Wanny for a long time, Saban deserves the chance. Ride it out with him...
