I've seen a bunch of posts and tweets on the need to change the offensive system or if this means a change in the system - I do think the key here is not getting the terms, system and philosophy mixed up.

At this level - it would be virtually impossible to change an whole offensive system in a couple of weeks, let alone a couple of days.

The system will remain the same but the approach, the philosophy, will be very different. As has been reported, Zac Taylor will work towards Dan Campbell's approach of setting the tone through the running game, more so than Lazor apparently.

Even though we haven't seen much of it, I do think all the plays and formations are in the playbook necessary to deliver on the change and what I suspect we will see, and also would like to see would be;

Run Game
  • More 12 and even 22 packages - I would then fully expect to see 1 back Power Play which is in the playbook, but also 2 back Power Play
  • Iso lead
  • Even the Iso Lead Draw & Play action off of it, that Dallas ran a lot of back in the day - can be a very effective play on 2nd and Medium/Long
  • Basic trap/wham plays
  • UNDER CENTER and less Shotgun alignments - This may favour Ajayi more going north/south at the LOS versus the horizontal aspect our Shotgun run game delivers on which Miller does a good job on. Not saying this has a negative impact on Miller, just think Ajayi could blossom and it's appears Coach Campbell has a bit of a man crush.
  • If we go toss sweep - I'd see this from under center from a 12 alignment with short motion versus that god awful toss sweep from the Gun with the back giving ground before he gets the ball - hope we loose that, I really don't like the blocking scheme for this play.
  • More stretch zone hitting the outside hard but again from under center.

Pass Game
  • Fully expecting more play action from under center
  • QB movement, roll outs, boot legs - just hope RT sees it and hits it early rather than waiting for sure for receivers to be open
  • I also expect and would like to see more downfield throws - in the 8-20 yard range - get some deep digs, curls, seems and posts - easier to see down the middle, this should keep the safeties from walking up and shutting down the run game.

Personnel

  • If Matthews is ok - I'm expecting him to continue to have a big role - he's a tough guy and Campbell likes tough guys
  • I went back and looked at the Jets tape and was impressed by Turner - His technique still needs a lot of work, but I think he benefits even more so with a focus on the run game.
  • Cameron could/should be the beneficiary of the downfield game
  • Still concerned about the LG/C/RT, especially LG - we need to be able to get push in the middle to have success or it's all just moot anyway - would just love for them to bring back Jacques McClendon if he hasn't been signed yet. I'd forego on his movement skills for his power and anchor ability.
  • I also wouldn't be surprised to see Earl Mitchell a bit at Full Back if he's healthy and let Phillips take more reps - seems he's deserving of more reps.

As for our new OC, Zac Taylor - I believe he'll make the adjustment and we'll certainly see a distinct shift in play calling. Execution though... that will be a whole different matter. Comes right back to the concerns at LG/C/RT.

I think the biggest thing we are going to see is different formations. I assume most plays can be run out of multiple formations/personnel groupings

This is clearly an attempt to align the philosophy between the HC and the OC. Just focusing on hard counts and cadence changes on first down with RT under center would help the run game. Just ensuring that we run the ball 25 times no matter what would help. Staying committed to the run game when down a score would help.

I biggest change is to let RT call the play at the LOS. Give him a couple formation options and a couple play options from each formation. All of this dependent on game planning the opponents strengths and weakness against our players.
The defense will be at a disadvantage until the ball is snapped.
Up to now, it has been easy for defenses to study our film and tendencies and then disguise coverage's knowing exactly where we want to go with the ball.
We have been at the disadvantage.
We have been tipping our hand on every play.

"Even the Iso Lead Draw & Play action off of it, that Dallas ran a lot of back in the day - can be a very effective play on 2nd and Medium/Long"

This is the offense I want to see, offset 'I', TE to one side, @ the line (preferably RT area) and FB offset to opposite side, just behind the QB.

But 1st, we need a true FB...

Good thoughts on this and well stated.

One other thing....is we don't use the TE's down the middle of the field in that gap between the LB's and the safety. It is almost like it is not in our playbook anymore.

The concepts will all be the same...its just a matter of what will have more emphasis than another...the afc east will still be sitting on our concepts but maybe we wont have so many situational tendencies

As for qb freedom nothing changes...only difference there is a different guy calls the plays
