Watching got me exicited about seeing Tannehills growth in Adam Gase offense year two.Is it me or does it seem like Tannys footwork is more active and improved?Leading to more accurate throws
I agree, even though I'm not really a huge Tannehill fan. I do believe that he can be good enough if he has a competent o-line, strong running game, and an offense that doesn't rely too heavily on that dink-and-dunk garbage. Gase has said that he prefers the dink-and-dunk, but luckily he made use of the running game and the vertical passing game far more than Philbin ever did.
Tannehill was handicapped by Philbin and Lazor. (I was seriously anti-Sherman, but now I believe that Philbin was the main problem, not Mike Sherman.) Philbin, the ex o-line coach, knew nothing about building an o-line. He preferred Martin over Incognito. He kept starting Dallas Thomas. Behind Philbin's o-line Tannehill was the most sacked QB over a 4 year period. Philbin (and Lazor) pretty much ignored the running game and the vertical passing game. I don't think I've ever seen an offense throw so many passes behind the line of scrimmage on 3rd and long. I remember one game where Miami had 8 plays inside the 10 yard line; they threw 8 passes and failed to score a TD. Fast forward to 2016, and we see Tannehill make a lot of pretty throws downfield... all because of a decent running game and the addition of the vertical passing game. (However, the o-line still needs a lot of upgrading!)
I've said it before, and I'll never change my mind... Philbin was the absolute WORST thing that ever happened to the Miami Dolphins! He (and Coyle) ruined a Top 5 Rushing Defense. His offensive philosophy was pure garbage, and he (with help from an incompetent Front Office) ran a team with some potential into the toilet. I felt more pride watching that 1-15 Dolphins team than I ever did watching Philbin's team. That 1-15 team played hard and with heart, even though they were short on talent. They were somewhat competitive in almost every game. Philbin's team was lackluster; his offense rarely got started until almost half-time, and by then they were playing catch-up because his defense allowed opponents to march down the field. As stated above, his o-line allowed the most sacks over 4 years. And, I have NEVER, EVER seen a defense allow so many 20+ yard runs when it was 3rd and 20+ yards for the first.
Gase will need a bit of luck to succeed, because Ross refused to completely clean house... he basically just replaced Ireland with Tannenbaum. I hope someone on the roster can play Center, because the Front Office is relying on Pouncey to stay healthy (not a chance!).
