Dolphins offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen said there’s no guarantee recently-signed veteran quarterback T.J. Yates will serve as the backup to Matt Moore on Saturday against the New York Jets.

That means rookie Brandon Doughty, the seventh-round pick from Western Kentucky and North Broward Prep, could still win the backup job this week and be elevated from practice squad in what is basically an open competition.

“How we end doing it by the end of the week, we’ll wait and see,” Christensen said.

Christensen said the team isn’t disappointed in Doughty, who has spent the season on the practice squad behind now-injured started Ryan Tannehill and Moore.

“We’re not discouraged with Brandon,” he said. “That would be a misinterpretation.

Christensen said the Dolphins needed to add Yates so they’d have two healthy backups behind Moore.

Christensen said the Dolphins didn’t sign Yates as opposed to promoting Doughty from the practice squad.

“It wasn’t as opposed to,” he said. “It’s both. I think we did want to get an experienced guy in here and there hasn’t been a depth chart come out for the ball game yet. We’ll get them all prepared, we’ll get a look at them, we’ll get to see how they pick it up. We were hoping we could redshirt Brandon but it may or may not have that luxury.

Coach speak IMO. Doughty isnt ready and they know it. Just don't wanna hurt the guys confidence

Yea right. Coach speak

Are you not allowed to bring in players for a tryout in the NFL? Seems extreme to sign a guy and then cut him if he doesn't have a grasp of the offense in 4 days.

Wow I'm surprised he could be ready to be thrown in so early - on a short week to boot. If Moore goes down, the playbook will probably fit on a napkin (or armband for that matter)

Ajayi will be facing 8 and 9 guys on the box all game long. Even if Moore hit a 75 yards long pass for a TD on the first play the jets will load the box all game long and make him beat them. Either that or TB is the worst HC in the NFL. It will be very difficult to run and you can't really do roll outs and bootlegs with MM the way you can with Tannehill. Coaches can say what they want but I expect us to be very limited as to what we can do on offense this week and of course the weather won't help. Our defense and ST's will have to give us an edge somehow to win this one.

Ozzy rules!

Cohen says the Dolphins are looking at Matt Flynn and Jimmy Clausen.

If Matt Flynn was capable of throwing the ball still I wouldn't mind him, but I though his elbow was shot. I've actually seen Flynn make plays and win games with his arm when needed, unlike Yates who was capable of so little that he was surpassed by Case Keenum in Houston when it came time to replace Schaub despite Yates having started in the playoffs.

Thought this could have gone either way but Gase clearly doesn't think Doughty is ready. He's taken a lot of reps but he's young and inexperienced and he has a tough tour de AFC East waiting for him if Moore gets hurt Saturday.i BELIEVE Yates has playoff experience though and thats a big plus if god forbid he gets thrown in.

If Moore goes down, we're better off just putting Ajayi and one of the other RBs back there in the wildcat for the rest of the game.

Tannehill has taken a lot of shots and with Pouncey out, Moore’s toughness might get tested right away. He might have better pocket awareness, but it’s a lot of rust to knock off and hit the ground running with guys that have this much season under their belts. I hope he has been quietly improving his game too and can drive this Gase offense. I’m still rooting for Doughty, but I don’t want to have to see him yet.
