Damion McIntosh took over at left tackle starting with the Tampa Bay preseason game. At the same time, Vernon Carey moved to right tackle.
Prior to this game, Vernon Carey had now allowed a single starting right defensive end (or starting right outside linebacker in the 3-4) to sack the quarterback OR make a single tackle in the running game.
On the other hand, Stockar McDougle did not have nearly as much success on the right side. Against the Bears, he allowed Ogunleye to sack the quarterback, and Ogunleye made three solo tackles on Miami running backs (for 2 yards, 3 yards, and 2 yards). He allowed Paul Spicer of the Jaguars only 1 solo tackle on a running back for a gain of 2 yards. Against the Steelers, he allowed LOLB Clark Haggans to sack the quarterback once, and make one solo tackle on a running back for a 1 yard gain. LDE Aaron Smith also tackled a running back for a 1 yard gain.
Since Vernon Carey took over at the strong side right tackle, he allowed Greg Spires to make one solo tackle on a running back for a 2 yard gain, and one assisted tackle on a 9 yard gain (not counting a tackle on a 6 yard pass to Evans). He did not allow Patrick Kerney to make a single tackle or sack, and did not allow Ebenezer Ekuban to make a single tackle on a running back or sack on a quarterback (he had one assisted tackle on 14 yard pass play to McMichael).
Damion McIntosh took over at left tackle against the Buccaneers and Simeon Rice. Rice did not have a single tackle or sack, Brady Smith did not have a single tackle or sack in the Falcons game, and Trevor Pryce had one solo tackle on a running back for a -3 yard gain.
Stockar McDougle's Totals: 2 sacks allowed, 6 solo tackles on RBs for 11 yard gains.
Vernon Carey's Totals: 0 sacks allowed, 1 solo tackle allowed for 2 yard gain, 1 assisted tackle allowed for 9 yard gain.
Damion McIntosh's Totals: 0 sacks allowed, 1 solo tackle allowed for -3 yard gain.
If you ask me, that is effective tackle play, Damion McIntosh and Vernon Carey are currently vying for most effective tandem in the league status...legitimately. I doubt they will get there as far as run blocking is concerned, but as far as pass protection, it is hard to criticize either of them for anything at the moment.
