I was listening to Colin Cowherd and he was talking to Jason Whitlock (not a big fan) but I thought he nailed this. They were talking about how good the Seattle defense is and Whitlock made this statement. Considering the brashness and egos on the Seahawks this seems like an oxymoron, but if you watch them play it is absolutely the truth and the biggest thing I saw missing from Miami's defense last year. Seattle will hit you, but they will also wrap you up and all 11 players fly to the ball. Too many times I saw Dolphin defenders trying to make the knockout blow and not concentrating on the fundamentals of just making the tackle. Would love to see Miami get back to the basics on defense and just make the tackle.

This isnt anything new. Historically Miami hasnt been able to tackle for ****. Just like covering TE's and screens and stopping a QB draw. There some things Miami just has never been good at, and those 4 are it.

The dreaded qb draw... Houston guaranteed to run it close to the goal line. Damn you Matt Schaub!

But yeah watching the Seahawks play is fun. We need to find linebackers like theirs

it makes sense. Too many guys try to make the knockout hits, they try to make the ball carrier fumble. Guys, just tackle the ball carrier...the end.

If Miami has "never been good" at tackling then they better start emphasizing that philosophy 2 years ago. You can't compete with poor fundamentals.

Actually, their LB's are somewhat pedestrian. Its the DL & Seconday (esp Chancellor) that key the Seahawks D.

I don't know man, Bobby Wagner is a beast, KJ Wright is a good, and that Malcolm Smith guy played good (hadn't seen him before tbh) I'd kill for their crew. Misi can stay though or better yet we trade Misi and Odrick for Earl Thomas lol

I think it's hard to pin their success on one guy. Sherman is huge. Thomas is huge. Chancellor is like an extra lb at times. Their whole D just runs like one well oiled machine

Although I would say their LB crew is definitely their least talented/effective group, they play within the system. They undersized and quick to cover all the underneath stuff and swarm to the ball more effectively. They're quite effective at doing what is asked of them within their system.

who on our team got any knock out hits this year...all I say was the softest hits and hope people fall over...

think to how we attempt to tackle whitehead? that dude looks like you should break him in half when you hit him and he always seemed to fall forward on us...(obviously not this year)

Earl Thomas is the MVP of that D. He allows them to do what they do with his range. Chancellor is awesome, but he's not as valuable as Thomas. Their LB's aren't pedestrian at all though. Their D-line is excellent as a unit - don't have any Reggie Whites, but they apply consistent pressure; their LB's are excellent as a unit - in the right position, tackle well, fly to the ball; and their secondary is as good as it gets. You don't have a D THAT good unless everyone is playing at a high level. It's tough to compare D's from different generations, but this Seattle D is as good as it gets. First D since 1970 to lead the league in points against, yards against, and TO's, and then they do that to the #1 scoring offense in league history (in great weather).

The great thing for Seattle is that they really only have to lock up Wilson and Earl Thomas - only two guys they can't afford to lose. They already have two 220 lb horses sitting on the bench behind Lynch, and they produce CB's. They'll keep who they can, but that thing is a machine.

Excellent post. I also think Sherman won't be going anywhere for awhile

avril and Bennett are going to want to get paid now

They have Avril locked up for two more seasons, and Bennett could stay or go. I'm sure they have a number they'd like to pay him, but that D doesn't need him, and he seems to like playing in Seattle.
