As everyone here knows, Miami missed a ton of tackles in the last game.

I have watched it over and over again and I just do not understand why it is so hard for veteran ball players to get their arms around a ball carrier and drive him to the ground. If that doesn't work, at least you slow him down enough to allow a gang tackle to occur.

We see defenders taking bad angles and going for highlight film hits only to bounce off the ball handler.

Thoughts?

The secondary (even those who are usually great tacklers, I.e. Shulters) is playing with some horrible wrap up techniques. They try to take someone like Alstott or Gonzalez head up... and we know what that does. If I can qoute Lil' Jon I'd say, "GET LOW, GET LOW, GET LOW, GET LOW, GET LOW". If you weigh 180 and try to take on a 250 Lber head up you're gunna look weak as an end result to say the least. Wrapping up is another issue, bad angles are a big part of that (ecspecially on the part of Howard).

Do you think that bad angles are a result of being caught out of position or just plain inability to recover due to slow agility?

Actually, I think it is the result of over-persuit. If you really watch the Dolphins over the last several years, you will see that we are a speed defense, especially our star players like Zach and JT. When our defense sees a shift, they immediately jump toward the action full speed. Sometimes this results in early season stops for a loss, but in mid-late season, the players often have nagging injuries and are just generally more tired, resulting in over-pursuit and bad angles on a tackle. As the defense tires, the offense builds in intensity and the problem just compounds itself. This is why Zach and JT will often get into the backfield and slow the play down, but not make the tackle. The defense would actually be better if it played a slower pursuit style, and just made the sure tackle.

BOTH!!!! But not for all players, some it's one, some it's the other, but while I think this is still a good Defense, it is STILL a slow defense. The other thing I've also noticed is that guys are getting an aweful lot of yards after contact even when the tackle comes from the guy with initial contact. RB's are dragging our defensive players for that extra yard or two, and a lot of times it takes a few of our defenders to bring one guy down, and he still gets extra yards. We need to get Bigger/Stronger up front and faster in the defensive backfield.

I disagree. I still say it is a speed defense that is aging and slows down with too much time on the field. RB's are making extra yards because they are being missed at the line, and almost any running back that shoots a gap is going to pick up 3 yards. By the time they reach that point, they are difficult for anyone to bring down. The D line isn't quite where it needs to be yet, and Spragan/Crowder still have a lot to learn about pursuit and positioning in their respective LB positions. The secondary is makeshift at best.

The defense has never been a "Speed" Defense. The only guy at his position who could be considered FAST was/is Jason Taylor. Madison has never been really fast, either was Surtain, Then we had Brock Marion, And Sammy Knight, No Speed there either, Zach is GREAT, but has Never been fast he just has REMARKABLE Instincts and toughness. Now Crowder Seems pretty Quick, but Overall team Speed is Lacking!!!

The reason nobody wants to wrap up is so that they can celebrate after the jarring hit they just delivered somebody. There isn't a play that goes but where someone doesn't celebrate. Just thought i'd add that.

It baffles me in every way. You're taught how to tackle at age 5 if you play PeeWee football. I doubt you lose the knowledge over time

This thread remains me of the voice-over in the Madden game.

"see thats the problem with everyone in this league, they go for the big hit knock out then BOOM, nothing......"

 I think that same quote was used during Ronnie's run to describe bulldozer manuever he used on that DB.
