Can any locals help me out here?

My old man and I are flying to Ft Lauderdale today. We’ll be staying at a hotel on South Beach from Friday till Monday. He’s a big Vikings fan, and I’m (obviously) a big Dolphins fan, so we try to go to the game whenever our teams play one another. Last two matchups have been in Minnesota though, so this will be our first one in Miami. Last time I came down for a game was the horrific 2007 season when I was 14, so it’s been a while.

We’re hoping to tailgate Sunday. We’d like to get to the stadium early and hang out drinking beer and eating for a while before heading inside. I think we plan to go pretty hard, since this trip is doubling as my 30th birthday celebration. Anyone have any suggestions on that front? I don’t really know anything about the tailgating scene at NFL games, never done it before.

Also, if any locals have suggestions for stuff to check out tonight and tomorrow night, that would also be appreciated.

I think there is a tailgating forum on this site bud, im sure you wanna go where some of our dudes here party.:) have a fun trip.

Food wise, you're in SoBe. Stone crab season opens tomorrow so I would recommend that be where you head Sunday night (usually the first day, they are selling frozen stuff as they don't have anything off the boat so that's why I said go on Sunday). The line is long but they have a great bar so show up early and put your name in and have a vodka gimlet or six. The place is legendary and has been there for well over 100 years and is so legendary that often when they are returning from commercial during the Phins games, they show people eating in there. Do not leave the place without getting the lyonnaise potatoes as well as the key lime pie. A cool place to grab a drink is Smith & Wollenskys at the southernmost end. You can watch the cruise ships go past the tables and there's some realllllly good people watching. Grab a mojito there for sure. If you're breakfast people, hit up Big Pink. If you want a local joint, there is a walkup take out restaurant on 6th and Washington. You need to go West just a little but it's on your left and has the best empanadas you've ever had in your life. Great cafecito as well which is the sugared cuban coffee. Enjoy and post photos.

Gates open before 9 and it’s been filling up quick. If you can get a parking pass, that’s the best way to tailgate. If you don’t get one, there’s plenty to do around the stadium. They have bars, food trucks, and family activity stuff on the South side of the stadium. I’m not sure what the off site parking situation is like.

I usually just walk around with my beverage of choice and people are generally super eager to let you join in for some rival trash talking.

There used to be a mod here who hosted a Finheaven tailgate every week for members. He is not longer around the forums, so I doubt he does the tailgate anymore.

A Publix sub, a football, and cold beverage.
Those are the basics and it goes up from there.

I’ll be there. Love walking around with a bourbon in my hand trash talking
If you spot two guys walking around — one in a Zach Thomas Fins jersey, the other in a Fran Tarkenton Vikings jersey — make sure to come up and we can bully my old man together for his terrible taste in football teams.

I won't be tail gaiting at the Dolphin game this weekend, but I will in Boulder CO. The tailgate will have stuffed jalapenos, smoked gyros with jalapenos and smoked baby back ribs amongst other crap. Who knows if we will go into the game other than to yell at people in our seats.

Thanks to everyone who chimed in on this thread, in particular @Fin-Loco for the fantastic advice. Not the outcome I wanted, but had an amazing experience at the game, and had a blast exploring Miami for a couple days. Such an incredible city. Tailgating before the game was also so much fun, with so many friendly people.

Fin-Loco asked for a pic, so here’s one of me enjoying a cigar and a beer at the Marino statue before kickoff.

It’s a long season. We’ll be fine. Fins up.

I went week one for my first home game, tailgating was a huge letdown.

IMO don’t expect much from “tailgate town”. There are no tailgate trucks or groups doing something big and selling tickets to like other stadiums. It’s just a bunch of dudes doing their own thing. Really odd vibe.
