Talent wins championships. It does not matter if a player is 20 years old or is 35. A team wins because of the players on the field and the coaches who coaches them. That is why I simply do not understand why some people on this forum dismiss acquiring certain key players in free agency and through possible trades. If a player can fulfill there contract and play at a high level why not go after them? Many of our best players were found in free agency and through trades- Jason Ferguson, Joey Porter, Andre Goodman, Will Allen, Justin Smiley, Chad Pennington just to name a few. This team has many holes on it. We have around 30 million in cap space, why not use some of it to improve the team. A player like Jason Brown or Ray Lewis could make a huge difference for this team. Sure these players would cost quite a bit of money but you pay for what you get. If you want talent you arent going to get them for a small contract. We can at least afford a few good players in free agency.
You can't dismiss any way of trying to improve your team. Sure it would be great to have a team of 21-22 year olds but it simply isnt possible. The draft is simply a way to improve the team. I am not taking away the importance of drafting but it is very illogical to think that an entire team can suddenly be built through a few drafts. We have 4 draft picks in the first 3 rounds. If you look at past drafts, a good draft would equate to having about 2-3 of those players ever becoming something. Yes I know that Bill Parcells is a great talent evaluator and he might be able to find more players in the draft than other teams. Let say that Bill Parcells can find 5 players that can at least contribute. Therefore, it would take about 10 years to fill an entire team through the draft.
I will not go into the argument about how we should build this team. I just feel that it is very illogical to think that it is just so simple to build through the draft. A majority of the draft picks never fulfill there potential. It is basically rolling the dice and hoping that you rolled the correct number. Free agency is a way to improve the team. Yes I know it has risks also. My point is that you can't discount any way of upgrading your football team. If there is a way to upgrade your team then why not go for it. I get tired of hearing we should just draft this player or that player. If it really was that simple then I would see some of the members on this site as general managers.
