Talent wins championships. It does not matter if a player is 20 years old or is 35. A team wins because of the players on the field and the coaches who coaches them. That is why I simply do not understand why some people on this forum dismiss acquiring certain key players in free agency and through possible trades. If a player can fulfill there contract and play at a high level why not go after them? Many of our best players were found in free agency and through trades- Jason Ferguson, Joey Porter, Andre Goodman, Will Allen, Justin Smiley, Chad Pennington just to name a few. This team has many holes on it. We have around 30 million in cap space, why not use some of it to improve the team. A player like Jason Brown or Ray Lewis could make a huge difference for this team. Sure these players would cost quite a bit of money but you pay for what you get. If you want talent you arent going to get them for a small contract. We can at least afford a few good players in free agency.

You can't dismiss any way of trying to improve your team. Sure it would be great to have a team of 21-22 year olds but it simply isnt possible. The draft is simply a way to improve the team. I am not taking away the importance of drafting but it is very illogical to think that an entire team can suddenly be built through a few drafts. We have 4 draft picks in the first 3 rounds. If you look at past drafts, a good draft would equate to having about 2-3 of those players ever becoming something. Yes I know that Bill Parcells is a great talent evaluator and he might be able to find more players in the draft than other teams. Let say that Bill Parcells can find 5 players that can at least contribute. Therefore, it would take about 10 years to fill an entire team through the draft.

I will not go into the argument about how we should build this team. I just feel that it is very illogical to think that it is just so simple to build through the draft. A majority of the draft picks never fulfill there potential. It is basically rolling the dice and hoping that you rolled the correct number. Free agency is a way to improve the team. Yes I know it has risks also. My point is that you can't discount any way of upgrading your football team. If there is a way to upgrade your team then why not go for it. I get tired of hearing we should just draft this player or that player. If it really was that simple then I would see some of the members on this site as general managers.

shoot tell that to the one loss patriots

Talent does not always win championships this is a very incorrect statement. Teams with the best players are not those that always win, its teams who mesh well together, play for eachother, players who have the drive to win and drive to be champions. Putting random talent on a team WILL NOT always make them champions that much is a fact!! If talent wins superbowls then people would be able to predict the winner every year and that obviously does not happen

Where did I state that talent always wins championships. The point of me writing this up is to say that we should not ignore a player just because he is a free agent. I also did state that coaching is a factor into what makes a championship calibur team. I think that it is a balance of the two that makes a team great. I also agree with you that putting a bunch of random talent will not automatically equal success. Again I just wanted to state that we should not ignore free agents or possible free agents IF it makes our team better.

They have a term for those teams that have the most talent. They call them "paper champions". We have been paper champions more than once over the past 10-15 years. And how many supr bowls have we won in that time? No way does talent win championships. Experience, drive and a teams ability to play together wins them. Talent does help though.

play calling helps a little bit too, we need to can DAN! (someone que the can henning thread!)

but yes you are right that FA are very important in building a championship team. FA are what you need to pick up in order to fill that single void that you think will put you over that hump. I think we will build on the draft this year and then hit the FA next season to try to put us over the hump. But it all depends on this years draft and next seasons outcome. I dont think they are trying to win a champonship this year. They are trying to build a dynasty. We may get a center though to give us a shot but I dont think they will go crazy with it.

what about:
coaching, discipline, chemistry, motivation, mental & physical toughness, preseason & game preparation, team work, desire to win & luck?

How many of those guys you mentioned where coveted free agents. Smiley is the only one. Chad was cut. He doesn't count. Smiley was the only one who could be considered some what coveted. The other guys we got for a very reasonable price. Spending million of dollars of big name free agents is stupid. You sign players who have something to prove. Players demanding huge money have nothing to prove. You sign guys like Cameron. Which we did. One ot two big name free agents isn't going to push us over the top. Spending SMART money and drafting smart WILL!

I agree, but you can still have all this and not win, You must have Talent as well... In 08 we were 3 wins from a Super Bowl.... What or who can we bring in to get those three wins? A talented WR would help..... I agree we need to build with the draft, but not pass up on so much talent out there, IF..... IF like you said they can fit in our team chemistry.....

GO FINS

Isn't that the same team that acquired Randy Moss and Welker thru FA'cy...Oh yea they once acquired corey dillion, Izzo, isn't our own Morris on their team... not to mention rodney harris, seau, tank williams, so I'd say the key to that 15-1 team was some key Free agents and a good draft, along with a established team.. So the best way to build is draft, supplimented with FA..and good coaching..
